Start/Stop Button Replacement?

Postby Jambo1964 » Tue Sep 06, 2022 7:13 pm

Hi,
Having taken delivery of my 2013 XK, I immediately noticed the finish on the start/stop button has degraded. I looks like the script is blurred, although I'm not able to tell if that's been caused on the outside or inside. I've attached a couple of pictures - that's not my photography by the way - the writing is blurred not the focus!

Since it's something I see and touch every time I'm in the car, I'd like to replace it. My question is has anyone ever done that? If so, was it a straightforward process, and likewise would locating a replacement be easy? I was working on the assumption that it would be a fairly common Jaguar part so might be a bit more readily available than some other model specific items?

Thanks.

The starter button is still available to buy new (about £80), separately from the transmission control unit. The transmission control unit itself is held in place by four fixings which are accessible after the outer trim is carefully levered upwards. When replacing the switch, care must be taken not to damage the electrical connectors and control module housed under transmission switch. Mike.

Perfect Mike thanks. I'll look into getting that organised.

So..... I called my closest Jaguar dealer who said "I'm not sure - I need to go ask about that and call you back", and then never did. I called the next nearest who said immediately that they could get it, quoted about £60 plus vat and said they could get it in the next day. The chap I spoke to even said that it was quite common with XKs. I said that was fine, but that I would be near them the following week and would pick it up then and also a new set of number plates.

Following week, I was at Prestige Jaguar at Paisley (excellent by the way...) to get my new car a health check and mentioned that I was dropping in to the Jaguar dealership on the way home to pick up the button and plates. The owner kindly offered to call and have them make up the plates so that I could pick them up quickly on production of the documents, which I had with me. He was able to do that as he has a good working relationship with them already. That part was fine, however on asking about the starter button, they denied knowledge and said that it could only be ordered as part of the gear selector unit and therefore much dearer. Prestige Jaguar checked their parts catalogue and it seemed to suggest that the dealer was right - despite saying otherwise to start with. It's not a critical bit of the car, but if anyone has any information on this that confirms or contradicts the Jaguar dealers position, I'd be interested to hear.

What may be confusing the issue in this discussion thread is the absence of your car's VIN. Jaguar can supply a replacement starter switch (C2P15331) for £65.34 + VAT but it's only listed for XKs from VIN B26644 to VIN B32752. Whether it could be adapted to fit cars outside of this VIN range isn't clear. For later cars, Jaguar appears only to offer the complete transmission control unit at £664 + VAT! Mike.

Hi Mike,

I did say at the outset that it's a 2013 so that likely takes it into the realms of 'later model' I suppose. And to confirm, my VIN is B52115.

The starter button irritates me but not to the tune of £796! I think I'll learn to live with it or not look when I press it..... :D

Thanks again for the help.
