Fuel Tank Cover

Postby mikeanson » Fri Mar 26, 2021 6:44 pm

Has anyone had problems with their fuel tank cover (2005 XK8 coupe)? Mine seems to have become very floppy (technical term!) and it just looks untidy. The velcro strips that are supposed to attach to the fuel tank straps don't stick very well either. Maybe a stiffening bar across the top side would help it to stay in place. Any ideas welcome!

I had that problem too, but I found that replacing the two old velcro fasteners with larger pieces of a coarse grade of velcro each side solved it for me. I attached the velcro with impact adhesive.
I thought about drilling for firtree fasteners, but the steel tank straps are perilously close to the tank itself!
Another way, though not invisible, would be to drill/punch a pair of small holes in the trim panel each side of each tank strap and run a zip tie through them and round the strap. They would have to be positioned high up on the straps, where they would not be able to slip down past the tank/strap fixing arrangement.

Thanks Astromorg! I thought about some sort of plastic fastener as well but couldn't see a type that would work and make it look neat. Your idea of using contact adhesive is good though. I'm going to try that. I have some wide velcro strips but they don't stick well to the board.
