GEARBOX OIL CHANGE

Hi have asked this question before but haven’t got round to doing it. I have a 2007 Xkr and fancy doing it myself have seen it done on you tube and it looks straightforward enough apart from the refill point. They also didn’t seem to check the temperature of the gearbox which I believe should be around 30-40 degrees. Also will 7 litres of oil be enough as I seem to remember you can’t drain it all out?

The quantity of oil draining from the box varies a bit and will be greatest if you are also changing the filter which is always a sensible precaution. 7 litres is probably cutting it too fine, at least 8 litres is more likely from a total oil capacity of 9.5 litres. Refilling should always be done with the gearbox oil below 30 degrees before starting the procedure. If the temperature reaches 50 degrees during the refilling, it's time to stop and let it cool below 30 degrees again. Consequently, it's a good idea to plan to fill the gearbox twice, leaving it to cool overnight between attempts.

Changing the sleeve when you have the filter removed is a very good idea. Inside the gearbox, look below the level of the sleeve for the retainer which pulls downwards to allow the sleeve to be released and removed outwards from the gearbox. Since the filter/gearbox sump is of plastic construction, ensure you only tighten the fixings evenly to the recommended 8Nm. Mike.

Re-flashing isn't necessary just to unplug the wiring loom so you should be OK. Mike.
