Air conditioning no blower

Postby bobsherwin » Mon Aug 21, 2017 11:20 pm

Recently had condenser replaced and a/c appeared working fine then out of the blue now inop with no blower. Somewhere I read the blower may have fused due to a blocked drain pipe! How can I check cause of failure, how easy is it to check the drain tube and whether blower is ok? Jag is a 2006 XK

Does the car have blower functionality when the aircon is switched off via the screen? If it does, bearing in mind that you have had the system worked upon, it may be a safety feature in operation to protect the compressor. Then, it would make sense to first check that the system has not lost gas from a leaking joint or similar by having a pressure check carried out.
Assuming there is no blower function either with or without the aircon switched on, the blower motor fuse (fuse 34, 40 amps) can be found and checked in the auxiliary junction box behind the centre of the rear seat backrest. The best check for the aircon drain is to look for evidence of water leaks in the footwells. If the carpets are dry, it's unlikely the drain is the cause of the problem. Incidentally, the blower motor has its own control module located alongside the blower in the front passenger footwell. However, checking the climate control system to determine control and other module failures requires diagnostic equipment. Mike.

Hi Mike and in answer to your suggestions: both blower and air con fuses ok, no water in footwells so hopefully drains ok, aircon was re-gassed and leak checked following condenser change, it is possible to hear the compressor switching on and running when climate control switched on. I have checked blower operation in econ, auto and climate on and off- all seems ok but still no blower operation despite speed display changing from low up to max. So is my next step to check the module?

It sounds like you have checked the obvious faults so checking the wiring and the blower motor itself would be my next steps. If both are OK, then I'd begin to suspect the module. Mike.

You should also check the blower relay R1 in the same box as F34

In the Auxiliary Fuse Box behind the rear seats, Relays R1 (Blower Motor) and R4 (Fuel Pump) are identical, so swapping them will prove whether it's the source of your problem or not. If the fault remains with the blower motor, it's not a relay problem but if the engine now won't run, then it is a faulty relay.
Swapping the relays back again will restore the car to its current condition.

All checked ok, blower connected to spare battery and runs ok, removed blower control box and found thermal fuse blown, replaced with one purchased from Amazon ( 240v 2a, 114degC.) all refitted and all working ok. Now just need to hope it holds out as reason can only be overheating but why, outside temps have been in the 80's here so perhaps may have occurred when air-con playing up? Thanks for you help

That's a good and useful-to-know result. I'm not aware of that thermal fuse being indicated in any of the available technical literature. I wonder how many others are hidden away waiting to challenge us all!!
