The Jaguar XK workshop manual points to it being coded to the car - "Using WDS, configure a new HCU."

The module sits on the network and talks to a lot of other modules. In another area of the manual it also states
"CAUTION: The ABS module and the HCU comprise a single unit and must not be separated." I know not why but mention this just in case as separating the part with the coded logic does not seem viable.

Its probably worth contacting David Marks or Tom Robinson, our two XK technical experts to see if it is possible to reprogram an existing coded unit or if it can just be reflashed and coded again without the need for knowledge of the previous VIN. Our experts details are in the magazine in the XK section.

Let us know how you get on.
