Failing To Stop!!

I had quite a scary moment recently with my 2014 XK (25,000 miles).
On leaving a car park to join a busy main road I braked, but the car continued in Drive, and the only way I could avoid ploughing into traffic was to stand on the brake with the rear wheels spinning!! Has anyone else had this issue, and what might it be?

Presumably, you will have had the car transported straight to a garage for repair work. From the description, it sounds remarkably like a brake servo failure, something which is not common these days. If so, it could be something as simple as a vacuum hose/pipe failure. Whatever it is, it needs to be corrected before driving the car again. Mike.

Hi Howard, how was the car behaving before the incident occurred, and what was the behaviour immediately after the issue? Was the engine revving significantly - as you say the wheels were spinning! Are you sure both rear wheels were spinning?

As you pulled away from the parking slot, did the car respond normally to throttle inputs, i.e. with the 5.0 litre engines, not a lot of throttle input is demanded to move the car at low speeds - in a car park for instance. What sort of speed were you achieving as you approached the braking point - where nothing happened?

I have experienced a similar issue, many years ago and not with a Jaguar, but a Land Rover with the same V8 engine (earlier version). In this case, the throttle essentially stuck open and the car began to accelerate towards the top end of its speed capability. Fortunately, it happened on a Motorway and was able to pull into a Service Area, but with seriously hot brakes to bring it to a halt.

It sounds like your garage has a very interesting fault finding exercise on their hands.

Hi Howard,
So sorry this has happened to you,it all sounds very scary and I hope that it never happens to anyone else.
Lets hope you find out what caused it to happen then at least you will know why it did it.
