Hi,
Does anyone know the model number of the mobile phone fitted as an option to a 1999 XKR convertible please. I bought my car 2nd hand, and it has the built in phone kit, but not the phone.
There seem to be two types around, one is the Motorolla 8700, and the other a Motorolla StarTac.
Has anyone got a 1999 model year XKR or XK8 with the built in phone and could you have a look at the model number for me please? Or are the StarTac and the 8700 the same phone?
I'd be grateful for any help with this.
Thanks,
Em

By the way I understand that it is a Jaguar specific Startac, an ordinary one doesn't work!!

It has to be a Jaguar StarTac Motorola phone AND unlocked.
I bought a StarTac Motorola on eBay for GBP 10 bargain! but I cannot unlock from Orange. It boots up with my SIM card but thats about it.
Typically Jagaur StarTacs are around GBP100.
I have searched eBay sites claiming to unlock these but most do not do StarTac & if they do its a lotta money.
At the moment it's sitting in my study while I plan move "C"!
I noted a little shop near to Southend Footbal club that claims to unlock mobiles; I might try that next.

Thanks for the advice, I've now heard that the Jaguar Motorola Startac phones have different software in them to work the Jaguar comms pack, so the ordinary Motorola Startac phones will only charge up in the cars. Does anyone know how to add the Jaguar software to an ordinary Startac, or is it impossible/impractical/uneconomical to do this?

I was delighted to find a StarTAC in the '97 XK8 I just bought. It did not have a SIM so I bought a Virgin Mobile card. This booted up, but I couldn't make any calls. After fiddling around, I found that the phone would only search for Vodafone and Cellnet UK. So I installed a Vodafone card and it all works. Maybe that could help Gadgetman, and Em if ever you find the software.
