Removal of rear silencers - a good idea?

I have owned my 2001 XKR for just over two years now and have been delighted with it. When I purchased it the rear silencers had been replaced with straight through pipe. This makes the car sound fantastic and very loud outside when you have your foot down. However - it obviously upsets the silencing system so that at various constant speeds you get a droning sound which is quite tiresome and detracts from the otherwise refined nature of the car. I was beginning to think about fitting the original silencers back again, but apparently they are very expensive (£600 + fitting) and the aftermarket exhaust outlets I have been to don't want to know. I would be grateful to learn from anyone else who has been here who can help me out with any advice where I can get silencers a bit cheaper!

Second hand rear silencers do appear in the JE classifieds as well as on eBay. Since most are sold to gain an improvement in V8 woofle rather than because they have rusted through, why don't you advertise your straight pipes as a swap for someone who wants some? Mike.
