Good day all.

Does any body have any experience of replacing the left bank upper oxygen sensor (Code P1647). At the moment the code is intermittent after turning it off. It doesn't recur after every trip, I'm sure the time will come when it does though.

On first looks I envisage slackening the coolant reservoir to help with access. I then envisage removing the exhaust heat shield to expose the sensor. Looks like WD 40 could be well used! I've yet to discover where it is actually plugged into the wiring harness.

I had to replace a Bank 2 (N/S) downstream post cat sensor recently on my X350R. Upstream or downstream, the job is likely to be quick and relatively easy given you have any trays or heat shields removed. My downstream (Black plug) unit took just two minutes to replace. An upstream sensor (above the cat) is likely to have a grey plug. Sensor part numbers appear similar, if not the same for most V8 models in the Jaguar range. I drew my new sensor from Manners as the part would be a genuine OE Denso part and not some other aftermarket Mickey Mouse impostor. I only fit genuine electrical components to any Jag I own. I`ve experienced disappointments with aftermarket units. The Manners guy was very helpful and understood the differences of grey or black plug units. I recall I paid about £67 delivered for my downstream component. Upstream parts are generally about double that price.

My sensor came out easily given that all of them had been out of the exhaust last year when I had exhaust mods done. That certainly helped as did obtaining a 22mm sensor extractor kit from ebay for about £13. If your sensor is tight due to age and corrosion, a fair amount of torque might be needed and having the car on a ramp to afford some long breaker bar swinging room is useful. WD will perhaps be mandatory. Fitting the new sensor should be done with copper grease on the sensor threads. Ensure non gets on the sensor tip or it can become scrap. Most sensor cables are about a foot long. You will spot the plug quite easily.

If you type your fault code into Google, you will find a fair bit on the subject. That includes a Youtube video for an X-type with the same P1647 fault that you have. Worth a watch perhaps?

I have seen the you tube video, my sensor is at the back of the engine bay and visible from the top looking down. I'll have a look at your post.
