Standard exhaust too quiet

Postby NormanD » Thu Nov 10, 2005 6:09 pm

I might as well start this off

Having purchased my XKR Coupe just on three years ago I felt that the standard exhaust was to quiet. Not wanting it to be to boy racer, but to give a nice deep V8 burble.

I decided to go to Racing Green at Ash Vale who are only a few miles from me and got them to fit one of their Stainless full exhaust with s/s Cats. What a difference, just the tone I was looking for.

Since then there is no stopping me on even more 'Upgrades'

Standard exhaust too quiet

Postby mike020150 » Fri Nov 11, 2005 4:03 pm

Thanks for starting this one. I suspect it will become a hot topic. I agree that the exhaust note as standard is far too civilised. It seems that even Jaguar has come round to that way of thinking if you listen to the sound track for the new XK on the official website. Quite a few of our members have upgraded their cars' systems and one of them who attended the recent XK8 seminar has achieved a lovely note by simply removing the rear silencers and replacing them with straight pipes. Whether that route produces acceptable noise at speed is probably a matter of personal preference but it is certainly very cost effective. Mike.

Standard exhaust too quiet

Hi. It was my car that was featured in the June 05 edition of the JEC Magazine, the article "An Exhausting Experience" by Nigel Thorley.

I had agreed for my car to be the guinea pig for an all new design being developed by Elite & Performance Jags Limited at Derby. Initially I had what they are marketing as their Roadsport version, which is a full system from the cats back. I've now swapped over to their Tracksport version, which removes the centre silencers with straight through pipes. I'm delighted with it and reckon that it is good value at £1,500 compared to some other systems out there.

I know a lot of fellow enthusiasts who have modded their cars, with either Full or Half systems, from either Paramount, Racing Green, David Manners, Borla or their own DIY efforts. Each to their own and you should certainly get a more noticable Burble at idle and Growl on hard acceleration.

I swear by my Elite system which has certainly TRANSFORMED my car.

Standard exhaust too quiet

Last week mine was fitted with a David Manners system and I'm trying to get used to the extra noise. Sometimes the noise is intruisive, but mainly I like it. The system cost £780 with fitting kit and carriage. It took 5 hours to fit as the offside pipe going over the rear axle was incorrectly bent and all of it a puzzle to work out. Fitting came to £300 ! This made the twin tail pipe too close to the towing eyelet, causing a knock. I overcame this by setting the twin tail pipes at 45 degrees instead of horizontal. I wouldn't think it sounds or is worse than the more expensive systems. Time will tell....

Just heard the new XK at first hand. It's even better than the website video noise. Looked underneath at the trick silencer to see if it could be adapted to the earlier cars and it seems the answer is, "no". It's completely different albeit a stunningly simple idea as far as achieving a Jekyl and Hyde personalty is concerned. The new car has a large transverse silencer box at the rear containing the valving which detemines whether gases emerge quietly or with attitude. Back to the drawing board then!

I agree that the new XK sounds great, but they really need to do something about those tiny little 'pea-shooter' tail pipes

I see the club has a system which removes the rear boxes. Anyone able to post detailed experience of that?

I guess we'd all like a better sound but without it becoming tiring on long hauls. Does the club system achieve that?

Having just spent last weekend at Le Mans in the company of a Vanquish, a couple of Ferraris and a couple of 911s, there's no doubt the XKR is somewhat anaemic in the exhaust department!

Anyone able to post some sounds like the Paramount YouTube video?

Hi

I haver the "club" system... which is giving it a grand title as its a couple of pipes!

The system certainly gives you the V8 burble and growl... which is great. It retains the tight bends so no HP gain is claimed.

It does buy you an exit ticket to the peashooters club, which is a bonus!

Ok - noise... it can appear boomy at 1800rpm in the cabin, but after smothering the boot with dynamat to improve the bass, the exhaust boom has gone too... BONUS!

The 1800rpm noise is not bad... no worse that another system.... but is noisier than a standard system....

I would have no issues reccomending the JEC system for a gain in V8 noise...

Have a read of the following on the macleod X-pipe:

http://forums.roadfly.com/forums/jaguar ... 189-1.html

Make sure you also read the following posts, esp re V8 burble/performance/economy gains

I have a MkI system which weighs fully 30lbs less than OEM courtersy of only having two rear silencers but stronger/heavier ceramic coated SS.

And combined with running on Royal Purple 5w30 I've acheived 37MPG at a steady 68MPG on a 360 mile drive. None to shabby for a 96 p plate. :)

Dyno'd @ nobles before and after from memory showed as giving an increased 22RWBHP and 29NM torque

So I'm pleased to say the least...and two years on the car still sounds phenomenal 8) Strangely the developer (Bill) will never claim it will increase power but it does :)

Now I'm LPG converted I'd guess that the power loss of that fuel puts me back on par with a stock XK8...the sound is still as addictive though!

xk8 exhausts

Postby pabloxk8 » Fri Jul 16, 2010 9:33 pm

Having been told that the cats needed replacing on my 1996 xk8 i decided to enquire about a s/s sports exhaust, having asked around i went to tony banks exhausts leeds. I cannot praise him enough quality exhaust, quality fitting, and the great sound of of a v8 sports car. It certainly gets more looks now. Got several quotes non compared to the one i eventually got. highly reccomended.

Well courtesy of the LPG conversion, and my cats being shot (holed and cracked and 3.5yrs old) I bought a pair of CAT bypasses from EAPJ and had them fitted two weeks ago.

OMG!! The acceleration is phenomenal and the engine braking when coasting to a stop is far less restrictive...in other words the car coasts far longer.

And the sound is V addictive

Even better it passed it's LPG emissions test so won't be an MOT failure when due in November.

Yippeee!!!
