Excessive Cooling/aircon Fan Noise during and after use

Hi all,

I have a 1998 4.0 V8 Coupe with 80k miles.

It's recently started to make a lot of fan noise, far more than the usual "after use" fan noise we're all used to. It's like the fans are doing double-time or something. I can hear them droning when stationary at the lights from within the cockpit, and from inside my house when I've parked and switched her off.

Also, and far more concerning, if I switch the Aircon off, the coolant temperature gauge leaps to the red after only a few seconds. It returns back to half-way when I switch the aircon back on, but the fans still keep droning on.

I've checked the coolant levels and they're ok, and there are no signs of leaks.

Thermostat problem maybe? Any ideas?

Has the water pump been changed????? early cars are noted for the plastic impeller parting company with the drive shaft, should be changed for a later pump with metal impeller, had mine changed along with the thermostat for £200 at Arun last year

All sorted - was the water pump. The impeller had totally disintegrated.
