Cheers for the info , Mike.
Tower arrived today, ordered yesterday from Neville at Jaguar spares Northeast. Less than 24hrs door to door, excellent service! :D

Flush system out as well as you can. I believe drains are fitted at the lower front of the engine block. Orange NOT blue for the antifreeze.

Fit the thermostat with the bi-pass jiggle valve in the 12 o`clock position in the tower to allow air to evacuate at that position. Squeeze hoses when filling and be prepared to fill via the thermostat tower cap and the header tank as required. Diluting the antifreeze from can strength will help in alleviating air locks. You may have to burp the system several times and top up to expel air and get the correct volume of coolant into the system several times. When you test drive, take water with you and a 10mm Allen key and watch that temperature like a hawk until you get it all settled down.

Let us know how you get on.

Neville is a great source of parts. "Wye eye, Mon". I always need an interpreter when I speak to him!

Ok, after a chat with Orkney and aaj, very useful info guys, thanks, I got stuck in... or maybe I got stuck... one of those jobs that you get so far and then think must be time for a cuppa........

Over the weekend, with an hour here and a few minutes there I have managed to get the tower off and the new one on ...

First off, make the Jenner spanner :) select one, stick in vice, heat up to red with blow torch and bend uri style....

Image

Then off with header tank top and the top of the thermo tower... after removing engine covers.

Image

how to get fluid out without too much of a mess on the garage floor... only need a couple litres out and it can be reused too as it was new in last year. Nice new syringe :!:

Image

Disconnect the two wiring harness clipped to each side of the tower, disconnect the coolant sensor in the cooling manifold and pull off the pipe to same along with the header tank pipe to tower connection.
Image

to get that off I need to take the pipe of the thermostat housing, won't come off so unbolt housing and remove complete :!:
Then decide I will need to take the cooling manifold off too, to allow the short top hose from the tower to the manifold to come off.

Image

Once thats off I can get to the four bolts on the tower to block connection... as promised the two at the back are barstewards to get to but the spanner works well AND if the front bolts are removed and then the rear ones loosened up to the point of coming out the tower can be tipped forward... no need to take off the intake manifold.
However, I will be cutting down the rear bolts before they go back to give me more room. !

Image

Here are the original bolts, same length...

Image

Cut down bolts and file clean, running an M6 nut up and down them... don't want them to snag on the way back in.

Had to stop at this point, the replacement of the cooling manifold... do I need to replace the rubber o ring gaskets on the manifold to block connections? two of.

Anybody reused them?

I reused my O-rings given that they were still in good condition. Remove all traces of calcium and other dirt and examine before reuse.

You might try bending the spanner again. I went to about 85 degrees angle just before the ring on the spanner. That might help a bit.

Thanks for that info on gaskets, are they available new? if so what are they listed as?
I found that the spanner at that angle gave me more leverage and fitted neatly in behind the various projections,,, I guess the length of the spanner also dictates different angles too.

Parts supply on the O-rings probably only in this case via Jaguar. Possibly known as cylinder head to coolant manifold seals. If they are in near perfect condition, they will probably be reusable. Clean mating faces to perfection to get a perfect mating face seal.

Pete

Good set of photos - as they say "a picture is worth 1,000 words"

The 'O' Rings (Plastic Linking Pipe to Block) part Number is C2C11477 (2 Required)

Carefully inspect the 'V' Bank Link Pipe for hairline cracks (mine cracked along the top seam)

Part Number for new Pipe is AJ85885. When I bought mine it came with new seals & temperature sensor although it had to be ordered in as it was a non-stock item

When I replaced my tower I could not tilt the unit to get the rear bolts out (I loosened the inlet manifold) as I left the Cross Pipe in place.

Thanks Mike, Allan,
Just checked the o rings properly and I think they have been out before as there are traces of sealant on them and in the bolt holes.
Rather than risk re using the old ones I will order new seals, SNG appear to have them in stock so I will get them to send a couple over.... watch this space.

Well the new o rings arrived, here is one new one on the right, old one on the left.

SNG Barratt came up with the goods although their shipping / postage cost was extortionate, £4.50 plus VaT :x Total cost for 2 rings, delivered £10.34. They could have been sent in an envelope under standard post NOT in a jiffy bag that is classified as a packet!!!

Just a case of putting it together, not forgetting to connect the electrical plugs and to "burp" the pipework after filling with coolant to get as much air out as possible.

Next job is to try it out, check for leaks... not going to be ready for drive it day though

That`s the way to do it!

Same job as my V8 S-type five years ago. Ensure you have a decent seal on the top cap. As previously said, the seal can be a bit difficult.

Keep a look out on the various pipes that have disturbed, in particular the bottom one on the Thermostat housing as they have a habit of trying to escape.

Well, after a blat around today, over 20 miles, it seems as if the problem is sorted..... however, the power steering reservoir decided to overflow....

Hi All, I have just changed my water pump and thermostat housing. Having read all the posts I now realise our temp gauges are useless and do not give an accurate guide to temperatures. So from a well known auction site I purchased a temp gauge that reads from 40 to 120 c, it came complete with sender and wiring instructions !!. Also from the same site i bought an adaptor pipe 5 inches long approx with the right diameter to fit inside the top hose already threaded to take the sender. So I cut out a 2 inch piece out of the top hose and fitted the adaptor and sender.
The wiring I ran inside the drivers side wing and in via the drivers door behind the rubber at the corner of the door ( this is not suppose to be a permanent fix just for experimental purposes) In the fuse compartment by drivers right knee there is a fuse for the diagnostic socket that is only live with the ignition, so I used this with an inline fuse for the supply. So I started the car (test done in my garage) and ran at idle for 10 min, The thermostat opens at 85 c and yes temp gauge in car reads normal (mid way) my gauge reads 87 c, I increased revs to 2000 in 5 mins my gauge now reads 95, car gauge has not moved, with temp now approaching 98 I check and the fans have kicked in and temp quickly drops to about 90 and fans switch off. During all this car gauge reads normal.from what i have read the car should run between 90 -95 out on the road.
Now the science...on top of the reservoir it has a pressure reading of 100 kpa...this equates to 14 PSI at 14 PSI water boils at 120 c that is pure water, with a 50/50 mix antifreeze it boils at 126 c. The next test will be out on the road.
All this is for my own benefit but I thought I would share it with you. Please do your own research , do not rely on my findings.
