High Loss Of Coolant

Postby yeltneb » Mon Jul 01, 2024 4:09 pm

Thoughts please - My 2005 XK8 is loosing 1 Litre of coolant after just 10 miles of local driving.
What's the most likely cause?
Many thanks

Sometimes it pays to look at other posts in the Forum. The link below will take you to the exact same issue resolved recently.

As Jim says, checking forum postings is a good way to find common coolant issues. Being methodical with your checks helps too. Don't immediately assume the worst (head gasket failure or frost damaged block) unless you have already ruled out the simple failures like soggy hoses and weakened spring hose clips. Look for tell-tale signs of antifreeze staining, particularly around the thermostat housing and the rear of the engine block vee where the hidden hoses run. Mike.

In my case it was ultimately just the cap on the expansion tank failing, so the coolant spilled over into the overflow tank situated in the drivers wheel arch and out through the vent pipe. A new cap for £4 sorted it. But the valley pipe that runs front of the engine to the back is another possible failure. Easier to replace in the normally aspirated cars than those with a supercharger.
