Front Subrame / suspension rattles

The front offside suspension was knocking on my 97 XK8 Convertible. My local independent (Powerbell Garage, Taplow) replaced the top wishbone fulcrum pin, which has improved, but not completely solved the problem. The garage commented that the cross member was showing slight wear at the point the fulcrum pin goes through the top wishbone. They have suggested the cross member is drilled out and a "top hat" bearing fabricated and inserted into the hole to take up the wear (this would be done by a local engineering shop and would avoid the need to completely replace the cross member). Has any club member had a similar problem and is the suggested solution sensible? I don't want to weaken the cross member or cause problems down the road, but am not sufficiently expert to judge whether this is a good idea. Can anyone advise please? All comments welcome. Thanks, Nick
