Nuts!

Postby painter » Mon Jul 29, 2013 7:01 pm

Having had some work done recently on my '96 XK8, I have just noticed my locking wheel nut
'cap' is missing. I can only assume the last venue forgot to replace it, but they say 'not'!
Is it likely that these locking wheel nuts are a Jaguar supply from new, in which case I may have a chance of finding the code? or can they be removed some other way and a new set fitted. :x

Painter,
Jaguar supplied the original security wheel nuts with caps.
I checked my Jaguar Parts List and that shows a security wheel nut kit, containing 4 nuts but does not show any caps.
In a case like this I would contact my main dealer to find out if any caps are available seperately.

Hi Grand Tourer,
got that wrong, it is the 'key' that is missing, the piece they put on the end of the gun to undo the nuts. I guess if these were originally Jaguar supply I should be able to trace the pattern
through Main Dealer? :)

Hi Painter,
Wheel locking nuts come in sets of 4 and a key to match. The key is stamped with a letter to distinguish which nut set it is suitable for. The set I purchased, not long ago cost circa £70.00.
The local Jaguar Dealer should have a full set of keys and would be able to identify the required item. The down side is, the key cannot be bought separately

In my case I finished torque loading the wheel nuts and the key remained attached to the wheel, so the key was cast into the wilderness never to be seen again. I now have one key in the boot and another welded to a four inch extension, painted red and in the tool cabinet.

It has just occurred to me that there two styles of locking wheel nut early and late, don't know the change point. From what I can gather both types are a bit fragile so would not have a windy impact gun near the car - not at £70.00 a hit.

There are numerous entries on the Bulletin Board where members have had serious wheel/wheel nut problems and I recommend you look them up, could save a few tears!

Hi Oldtimer,
problem has been solved, the 'key' nut which I always kept in the cigarette lighter compartment had been correctly replaced beneath the spare wheel in the foam receiver, (which I guess is where it should be). The last place I would have thought to look, didn't even know that little cubby hole existed. It looks in good condition, no signs of wear on the studs so should be of service for some time to come, and for safety I'm leaving it under the spare wheel. :)
thanks for the replies
