Detroit alloys

Postby jagnut » Mon Mar 06, 2006 7:38 pm

I have just damaged one of my Detroit alloys You know the ones that look really fantastic but are very fragile. I wonder if anyone can advise me how much it would cost to replace the chrome outer ring and any companies that would do it.
I remember when i picked the car up the dealership said"Whatever you do dont damage those wheels" I was so careful but still did it. :(

Can't say I've tried them but I have a recollection that I've seen 'Wicked wheels' advertising a refurb service. Mike.

On previous postings on other forums where this has been raised, it seems the concensus is that they are non repairable and the only course of action is new at a very high cost I believe!!

I have some scuffs on my 20" montreals. Wicked Wheels are quoting on their website £225+vat to refurb an XK8 split rim. I have a also read that you can ship the wheel to BBS in Germany and they will repair the rim for about £100 although I am not sure of the practicalities of this. I also saw that Paramount are selling complete sets for £1599 but I don't know if you could buy just one. Has anyone else found any other options. I know that some of the refurb shops will repair and paint the rims but I would like to keep to the original chrome.

I think these were/are BBS wheels?

If so I think it's main dealer contact time (you give it to them they send it away) sans tyre and cleaned.

Regards

Try a company in Kent called Lepstones. They will replace the rim for about £150. They have done some others for us. Tell them Kevin from designXKR sent you and they should give you a reasonable price.

Curbed wheels- just a thought , the Halfords chrome look trim sold in 2.5 metre coils, self adhesive ,is very cheap, and would do the job of masking the blemishes.It's supposed to be impervious to water, but I do not know what it would do to the balance;perhaps, as it would go all around the circumferance of the wheel the balance would be unaffected.
The same trim I used on the interior of my car, and around the rear lights, to great effect,in my opinion- see "Gilding the Lily" under general topics.
If you find a cheap wheel refinisher, let us all know-Good Luck!

The rims are for sale on ebay. How difficult would they be to fit as a diy job?

I had this reply from the seller;

"Although not a job to be rushed it is actually quite an easy straight forward process . To summarise - The process is to undo the centre part of the wheel (by the spline bolts on the outer edge of the wheel, this is the time consuming bit because of the quantity ! ). The centre then pulls out as it is a split rim wheel. The tyre can remain on the drum if required. The stainless trim is glued onto the drum of the wheel. This is pulled off and the replacement trim put on. The centre is then bolted back in and clamps the trim to the drum making it a solid structure (the trims have a lip as a retainer). "

He says the tyre can be left on , would you need to deflate it? - What could go wrong? Any thoughts anyone.

Initially, Jaguar dealerships used to split the wheels (only after deflating the tyres - very important) to replace the trims. Later, the dealerships ceased this practice. It is likely that refurbishment and resealing was not always satisfactory and hence the practice was stopped. As your supplier says, the task is perfectly possible if it's done carefully although the cost of the trims plus fitting may make it more cost effective to buy a complete second hand wheel. Mike.
