Handbrake light on

Hi all I have a problem with the handbrake light not going off on the dashboard. I removed the gaiter from the hand brake and the switch seems to be working when depressed. I have replaced the with with a used part but still have the same issue it will go off now and again the hand brake is being released mechanically.

Both of the switches turn off the light (old &new) when pressed down manually, it also seems the the metal contact leaver on the handbrake is to coming fully into contact with the switch.

Has anyone had this issue? other than trying to add something to the switch so that the leaver does make contact with it I can only think that the handbrake mechanism is worn or faulty.

Any help would be very much appreciated as the MOT is due soon so I want to get it sorted asap

I seem to recall there's a rubber bung in that area of the handbrake mechanism. Is it possible it's become displaced and is affecting the travel of the lever? Mike.
