Never a dull moment with Jaguar! Now I need a new steering rack for a 2006 4.2 (Non supercharged), tried Eurojag, SNG, etc, no luck, anyone any ideas? There are some on eBay, but would prefer a bit more provenance if possible. New is £1800 plus VAT and carriage, not even going there!

Also try Hills Salvage and Andy at Auto Reserve, Andy.

I found this recon unit. Just one of perhaps several options from reconditioning businesses. I`ve had recon racks before now with a warranty. That might be the way to progress. If this example isn`t suitable, then ask if they can overhaul your unit to OE standard. Obviously VIN identifier will help any reconditioner.

A couple more suggestions for you. I believe ZF manufactured the rack so a call to them (at Nottingham) to establish if they offer a reconditioning service might be worthwhile. Failing that, Kiley Clinton (in Birmingham) used to be well-known as Jaguar rack reconditioners and may also be worth approaching. Mike.

Thanks Mike, sourced one from eBay for £150, handed over to my mechanic, fingers crossed! Glad I never went near a main dealer, would have been looking at a big bill, hopefully this will work ok, will report back..

Update: Car back today, has had steering rack fitted (£130 from eBay), plus new ancillary drivebelt fitted, plus leaks to coolant system and gearbox dealt with, all for £175 labour, thank goodness for good independent mechanics, I dread to think what I would have paid at a main dealer..

Great result, Andy.

Reckon you would have had a £3k hole knocked in `yer sky rocket for that at a Main Dealer.

The clot across the road reversed his Citroen thing into my youngest daughters Merc 180 (MY66 plate) and stove in the drivers door. Cost of replacement new door, painted and fitted at the Merc dealer in Canterbury.....£2240! The man offered £1k in cash to get himself off the hook. My daughter said the Merc was an NHS lease car so the matter was out of her hands. The man let out and audible groan...another insurance claim in the offing. He did the same thing five weeks ago to the neighbour next door!

I agree Mike. I think if you have a newish car then main dealers make sense, the service stamps alone will add to resale value, but to take a 12 year old XK with 110,000 miles on it any way near a main dealer would be madness, and they don't usually want to know anyway.
