first MOT, passed but advisory.

Postby paullbuck210 » Fri Feb 03, 2017 6:09 pm

My XKR (63k miles) just had its MOT, passed ok, but with following advisory.

Drive shaft UJ slight play both near and offside.

Is this ok or likely to become a problem soon? I know the garage well as he does all my cars there. He tends to be strict (which is a good thing as far as i am concerned) Not knowing these cars not sure if this is fairly standard?

As I say, only an advisory.

Any thoughts please?

as an advisory its not something you HAVE to get done

I know for a fact that XJ cars have to have a set weight placed in the car, or the rear suspension ' strapped ' for testing of the UJ's as if the car is in the air and the suspension unsupported will ' show ' some play in the UJ , in fact its not actually there if the correct testing method is used

so i wouldn't be concerned, research this info and show your usual tester for his ' information ' ,

great thanks. Like my cars to be as perfect as possible, but looks like this isn't a major issue yet.

One regular issue with all Jaguars is the endfloat of rear driveshafts. For all XK models, it's something like 6 thou max (from memory) which translates into quite a bit of movement and can be mistaken for UJ wear. Non-Jaguar garages in particular often flag the movement as an advisory when it's perfectly acceptable. Mike.

I had this as an advisory on my XKR's last MOT until I pointed this out to the them and they removed it, as Mike says Jags are born with end float in the rear driveshafts, you just need an MOT station that understands it.
