Brake light switch

My 1997 xk8 4.0 litre comes up with engine failsafe mode. Garage has checked it and advised it’s the brake light switch according to their diagnostic meter. I intend to fit a new one, is there any difference between the switch, my car has cruise control. What part number am I looking for.thanks mike

I've never heard of a brake switch failure causing an engine failsafe situation, just cruise control disabled and maybe traction control in pre DSC models. Any chance of knowing the actual fault code number to see exactly what's going on?

Part number for repro switch at SNG Barrett is LJB6420BB and about £120. Used ones about £50 but not always available. Cheapest and effective economy way is to replace the two micro switches in the assembly. NB the fault is often a dry solder joint on one of the switches and repair is no-cost! I did that 12 years ago and still OK

By the way, getting the switch out is quite easy but depending on luck and the physique of the repairer, getting the assembly back can involve removing the driver's seat for access and, literally, the use of fishing lines to get the assembly lined up

Thanks, I’ll have to ask the garage next week. I was there when they plugged in the obd2 and it definitely read brake light switch. Thanks for the part number, I thought that was correct but then got twitchy in case there was a non cruise control bit.

Before you look at replacing the switch, I'd just check the integrity of the wiring connection on it. It could save you a lot of money!

As regards the part number, just look on the Jaguar Parts website and go through to the Braking System area for your model and you'll find it. See here:
