2006 Jaguar XK (150) Brake Pads and Discs

Postby jarturner442 » Fri May 22, 2020 3:49 pm

Hi - I am new to the Forum.
I have owned my 2006 XK convertible for two years.
At the last major service carried out by Grange Jaguar Brentwood I was advised that front and rear pads and discs were getting low.
They wanted to replace them but I had just got a new MOT so the brakes had passed and the quoted price was quite unacceptable (in my mind)
Years ago I would have had a go myself but too old for that sort of thing now so have decided to get the local garage to change them for me.
I am struggling to work out what is my best option as there are so many choices out there and some pads/discs are for performance brakes?
Not sure if my brakes are performance or not - I am a wafter - I love the car for its comfort and am no boy racer, do no more than 1000 miles per year so would assume standard brakes would be OK?
Can anyone advise me on my best options for price and quality - not thinking of OEM but some good and mid range pricewise
Any suggestions/advice would be welcome
Richard

When a dealership suggests it's time for new pads/discs, it's typically done on a worst case scenario basis. I.e. if you drive hard, the components won't last until the next service. Hence, it's worth getting on your knees with a torch and a mirror to check the advice. 'Performance Brakes' were not normally fitted to naturally aspirated cars like yours. They were deemed more appropriate to XKR models and can be identified by the usually-coloured and larger 4 pot front callipers. If you have any concerns about buying pads/discs, simply stick to the most obvious brand names, like Ferodo and avoid the Jo Bloggs varieties. If the car is not already fitted with braided hydraulic hoses, adding these to a brake overhaul is probably the best way to achieve a noticeable improvement in performance (by way of much better pedal feel). That advice clears the air a bit and gives me a better idea of what I should get
