noise under braking.

Postby paul999 » Sat Mar 17, 2012 4:14 pm

I have noticed recently that on braking from moderate speeds there appears to be a noise sounds like a Spifire coming in to land 9(droning noise) it seems to emanate from the front end.Could this be the brakes or maybe a wheel bearing there is no noise whilst driving only under braking.Regards Paul.

If there isn't any noise when not braking it's very unlikely to be a bearing ,
more likely to be front disc(s) and or pads , if you have Brembo brakes with cross drilled disc's it may be that the drilling's need cleaning out , I use a small drill bit on mine and it works a treat ,

Hope this helps ,

Drilled and grooved discs on my S-type V8.

They can produce a turbine like sound under moderate to heavy braking and have done since fitting.

As Nik says, if the drillings block up with brake dust that can also produce a slightly increased noise level.

Cleaning out with a drill bit can be a filthy job and the brake dust can be difficult to remove from your hands. Best to wear latex gloves.

dont forget the damper bushes, or anti-roll-bar link bushes , as these are loaded under braking

and buy some ' barrier cream ' to apply to your hands before working, it will all come of with soapy hot water ,

Thanks a lot guys for your advice. The discs are past their best so I will probably invest in new discs and pads anyway and see if that makes a difference.Finding the best compromise between price and quality seems to be difficult.I dont drive like my pants are on fire but would still expect good retardation without warping or any other side effect that would render the car undrivable.I have had several answers on here but find opinion on this matter diverse talking to retailers at shows, on line etc.
