Steering, Brakes, Wheels & Tyres

I have just bought my first XKR 2001. 20" Paris wheels. P zeros all round.2 new on rear. Fronts up for replacement. Suspension checked and all fine. Car tracks and "hops" worryingly over rough surfaces. I see this is a common forum discussion. Should I replace with Eagle 1's or Dunlop SportMax all round. Area Bournemouth. Any good fitters/suppliers. Any market for the almost new rear P Zeros. Came to XKR from S2000. All a bit of a shock this problem. Help welcome please.

I got rid of the Pzeros when they were worn out and put sportmax on my XK8 and much prefer them. They are grippier and quieter in my view. However, correctly inflated Pzeros should not make your car jump about in the way you describe. Have someone who is experienced on the front suspension have a look. My local dealer said mine was OK but I felt the handling was insecure. I took the car to David Marks in Nottingham and he immdeiately diagnosed debonded rubber V mounts on the front subframe. Much better after this was done.

Thanks Bill, I spent this morning talking tyres with different dealers. Seems there are different opinions re P Zeros but seems agreement that on 20" wheels the car will track along the road surfaces which may be what I am trying to describe. I have also left the car with a "specialised jag workshop" and asked them to check the suspension elements a second time. Mike

XK8s on 20" rims do not suffer from tramlining unless there are worn suspension components. Ball joints and front wheel bearings are the most likely culprits. Unlike earlier Jaguars, front wheel bearings should have zero free play when tested and only very small amounts of free movement in the ball joints. However, significant free play should be present at the rear wheels largely as a result of the axial free play in the diff output shafts (up to 6 thou). Mike.

I have now done the deed.Replaced the front P Zeros with Dunlop Sports Max and it seems a different car. Work carried out by Bathhurst tyres . Ringwood Road. Ferndown. Dorset. Seemed careful workers and I was allowed to watch. Mikedes :-)
