Fuel Filling Issue X150 XKR - Pump Shut Off

I have a 2013 Jaguar XKR convertible which I am struggling to fill with fuel. During filling the pump keeps shutting off suggesting the tank is full (which it isn’t). Despite positioning the pump at different positions through 90deg and varying depths in the filler neck I am still struggling to fill the car. It took fifteen minutes to get £40.00 in the tank this weekend after which I gave up and left with what I had. I have tried different pumps at my local ESSO garage to no avail. I have this morning spoken with Marshalls Jaguar Oxford my nearest main dealer who have said they have not experienced this problem previously with the XK150.
Any suggestions or previous experience and/or remedy would be greatly appreciated.

The car has a FSH with Jaguar and has covered 12,000 miles from new.

Hi Peter, this phenomena has been recently reported in the Modern XK column of the magazine where owners reported a similar problem to that which you are experiencing. It turned out that the pump at the filling station was effectively over pressurising the flow into the fuel tank and causing choke to operate on the pump. Moving to an alternative pump / station solved the problem. On one occasion, the owner reported the problem to the station attendant who had the matter looked at and corrected by the service technician for the pumps - excellent service.
You don't say as to whether this is a new experience, i.e. how long have you had the car and have you managed to fill the fuel tank without issues up until recently?
Experience indicates that the problem generally lies with the fuel station pump so I would suggest trying alternative filling stations before embarking on an investigation of the Modern XK fuel tank venting arrangements which are quite complicated.

Many thanks for your reply which is very helpful.

I have only had this car since December 2020 and have therefore little experience with it so far! I previously had similar problems with an XKR Coupe that I owned back in 2018 and posted on this forum. I will as you suggest try a different garage. Interestingly when I first filled the car up (at the same garage) I managed to fill it from empty to full with no issues. The problems have been with subsequent attempts to refuel.

I have just renewed my membership effective December 2020 so perhaps haven't seen the previous magazine article to which you refer.

I have had the same problem and as Jim says it's not a fault with the car but with the fuel pump.

I just wanted to confirm that when trying a fill from an alternate Texaco fuel station I have experienced none of the problems described in my original post. This certainly corroborates the helpful replies received and the earlier published article from December 2020 in the JEC Magazine.

I guess the problem remains albeit the root cause is with the sensitivity of the cut-off at the pumps. This is clearly the responsibility of the fuel station and nothing to do with our cars. This largely suggests however that when filling up it's a hit and miss as to whether you can get fuel in the tank!
