Fuel System

Postby Bill » Fri Jan 25, 2019 5:32 pm

I have a 2000 xk8 which will not start, checked the usual things found there is no fuel coming though so thought it might be a pump fault, looking at the fuses and swooping relays around there is no power on no. 7 pump fuse. Has any body got any ideas ?

The fuel pump system is part of the security system as well as being controlled by a signal from the engine ECU to say the engine is turning/running. There is also the inertia switch to check too. The simplest thing to do would be to run a diagnostic check on the codes stored in the car. A simple code reader won't be able to check everything but it may give you a few more clues. Mike.

The pump is attached to a bracket with a 10mm bolt, this you will need to undo and catch before it drops to the bottom. The whole unit then lifts out with the fibre bag filter attached. I fitted a Am with no problems, difficult to fit bolt so cut a small piece off it so it slide back in place. It is worth buying the bag filter as well.
It can be done without removing the tank but it is very tight.

This is a tough job to do with the tank in the car. What tipped the balance for me is that my XKR has 2 pumps so I decided to take the tank out. The hard part of this is releasing the misleadingly named "quick connect" fuel pipes. You will need access under the car and to fashion a tool that will push the outer collar back. Once you've cracked the fuel pipe issue the rest is easy.
Taking the fuel tank out makes changing the fuel pump easy and you can clean out the tank and assess its condition.
There are some useful videos on YouTube on how to do this.

Got the pump out OK held in by a 7mm bolt very fiddly but did it with the tank in situ through the speaker hole in the rear shelf. All I have to do now fit a new one and fuel filter
