Fuel filter

Is it right that I have to remove that aluminium (?) heat shield to get at the rusty bolt that holds my fuel filter in place? Surely not!

Re: Fuel filter
Bit of a thread resurrection !
Hope this helps someone.
Just changed my filter today, the old Mann filter was installed in 2006 according to the date stamp....
2002 X100.
Best place for access is the car is reversed up onto a set of ramps, the filter is on the nearside just forward of the rear wheel .
Just a cylinder about five inches long and about inch and a half diameter, can't miss it ! Pipes out either end secured by union nut type connections.
It is possible to get the filter out without undoing the clamp.....undo the pipe connections first, I sprayed mine and the filter holders clamps with some lube then left them twenty minutes, when undoing the pipe nuts hold the filter hex firmly too and twist the pipe nut backwards and forwards to make sure its not snagging on the alloy filter connection.
Then reach up six inches towards the rear of the car, round the bend of the pipe and you will find a pipe clip.
Unscrew the clip and pull it away from the car underbody, undo the union connections completely, a small amount of petrol will come out (half pint maybe) but don't worry to much about it you will not drain the rest of the tank !!
It's now possible to pull the pipe backwards towards the rear of the car, do bear in mind that the clip also holds the return pipe to the tank as well so don't wrench at it !
The fuel filter will slid out of the holder towards the newly created space where the intake pipe was and by twisting the filter vertically it can then be pulled downwards and out.
As they say, assembly is a reversal of the removal procedure
....be careful NOT to over-tighten the union connections to the filter.. 12ftlb is all they need, apparently.
Start it up and check for leaks.... hopefully it will be fine

Re: Fuel filter
Couple of pics of the fuel filter cut in half, looks a bit choked........but not so much it wouldn't run....probably a question of when it would start causing problems.
