And on the Sixth Day

Postby PTR200Jag » Sun Dec 14, 2014 5:09 pm

So here we are six days after the arrival of my first Jag... the paint work is lumpy and bumpy so at 7.15am this morning, in the rain, I ventured forth with the Clay Bar from Bilt Hamber and spent two hours in the on / off rain getting on with it.
There is nothing like cleaning a vehicle to get to know where things are wrong, like this side marker and reflector... the " chrome" trims surrounds are coming off at the ends... then you get to thinking should these really be on here?
So that is the question, are these trim surrounds actually supplied from Jaguar or are they after market items?

well at least the paint is shiny now...

thought so, its got to go, not only does it not fit properly but some of the "chrome" is less than perfect so probably been on some time........

So got to go, as soon as the weather picks up and I can see how they are fastened on, probably need to fire up the hot air gun to get the cats off the panels...

From pictures on the internet of 02 cars it would appear that the front spotlight embellisher are not standard / extras either ?

and on the seventh day;
The bling removal commenced this morning with one of the reflector trims coming off in pieces... :!:

Having got to the side indicators I noticed that some pictures on the net have clear lens covers and some orange covers :? so what is the correct one for a 2002 model?

Mine has clear and when the trim ring was removed it looks as if the lens is now open to the elements and doesn't sit against the bodywork.. :o . if that makes sense.
Maybe the ring was part of the fitting? a complete light fitting after market jobbie?

Anyway, I will either have to put the trim ring back or find out if it is the correct fitting to start with.
Any help/thoughts appreciated once again :)

that is one of the ones you might get away with ,

i think they should be orange, but good quality clear ones will never be commented on.......

Cheers BB !
Managed to escape the daily grind earlier today, even before the sun went down which is pretty early now :(

Back into it and got all the trim rings off, will post the pic of the pile tomorrow! (camera battery died, from overwork, after the photos shoot!)

Decided to put the trim back on the side indicator lenses, as you say, could get away with that.
Should be able to take a comparable pic tomorrow of the car side on to see the difference.

Last item to go will be the Jaguars off the side wings although my other half says she quite likes them

Also ripped off the front reg plate as it was loose on the mount to find that some more bling in the form of a chrome reg plate mount had been added. Guess where that is now ? !! in the pile!
Image

Cleaned up the original mount and put it all back.. just the back one to sort now, new plate on its way in the post :D

Sorry about pics, always seems to be raining :(

With those things off the list I gave it a thorough going over with Bilt Hambers finest Auto Balm.
Sometime in the warmer weather I will need to attend to some scratches in the lacquer.

On the 2002 XK8 the only Chrome / Chrome effect should be:
Front Grill Blades
Front Badge
Wheel Centre Badges
Aerial Mast
Boot Plinth
surround to rear lights
Rear badges (Jaguar & XK8)
Exhaust Trims

The small indicator repeaters on the front wings were originally orange. There are numerous suppliers of alternatives of varying quality! The front & rear reflectors are recessed but the small repeaters have no recesses

Your wheel centres are either aftermarket or of later manufacture

Thanks for the info, the side repeaters are likely to get left just now as they sort of look ok..

Haven't been able to do much today, got to drive instead!! some motorway, some back roads, some town driving including a couple of smart pull offs from traffic lights.... just testing the sport mode, officer.... average 19 mpg mixed...
So the wing jaguars are still on the car but did manage to repair the drivers door card which seemed to pull away every time I shut the door... until I discovered that someone had left out the door handle screw under the rubber cup in the pocket... :x

Just found out the rear number plate is mounted on one of those bling holders

As the new rear reg plate has arrived I took the old one off to change it that's when horror set in.... it was hanging on (off actually!) with sticky fixers onto this bling plate which in turn was fastened with four self tappers directly to the boot lid. ugghh...

Having pulled it all off I am now left with a boot lid with around eight holes in it :x

The question is; does the XK8 actually have a registration plate mount on the boot lid or does the reg plate usually get fixed directly to the metal of the boot ??

Originally, the rear plates were fastened directly to the boot lids. There were drilling positions marked by Jaguar with a matt paint. However, most fitters seemed to ignore them and simply drilled straight through the plates in willy nilly fashion! Mike.
