seat not moving

Hi folks,

Thought it wouldn't take long for my car to challenge me again. This time drivers seat motors have all stopped working. I note fuse also controls seat belt buckle and warning for this has stopped working too. Unfortunately the fuse is fine though, swapped it anyway, still nothing. So couple of questions: 1. Is there a relay just controlling drivers seat? (passenger side works fine). 2.Is there any manual override to allow me to move the seat? Any thoughts?

Quite often, this problem is a seat module one. Either the module fails or its wiring below the seat becomes physically damaged. Try swapping the seat modules to test the suspect one. Mike.

Thanks Mike, done and both modules are definitely ok, drivers side module works fine on passenger side.

As an update, as it was working fine a week ago I am fairly sure a cable beneath the seat is at fault, maybe a broken wire? However, as the seat won’t move I can’t access the torx bolts holding it down, in order to lift it and check the cables. Catch 22!

At this stage, you probably haven't much choice. If you take out the seat module and devise a way of powering the seat motor directly from a DC source, dependent upon where any wiring break has occurred, you may be able to move the seat to access its bolts. Mike.

Yes I guessed as much, thanks Mike. As access is so difficult I think I may pass this one to my trusted mechanic…..

Andy, just going back to your original post, you don't say which fuses you checked, because according to my electrical diagrams, there are two; the fuse for the seat belt light requires both F8, 5A in the drivers side dash fuse panel and also F1, 20A supply to the Seat module that feeds all the seat motors too. Are they both OK?

For all motors to stop working does sound like a power supply problem.

Hi Andy,

Simple thought, but you say the driver's seat module works fine on the passenger seat side, but did you try the passenger seat module on the driver's side?

Thanks both. I did not check Fuse F1, so will do so, if only it could be that simple! Yes Jim i swapped the modules over, drivers one works fine on passenger side and drivers now dead, so I know they are both ok. Interestingly this happened just after I had reluctantly agreed to add my daughter on to the insurance temporarily and we only found out when she got in and tried to move seat forward ( she's very short). Given that I know what sort of driver she is I wonder if the car did it on purpose :D

Astromorg, what a star! Fuse F1 had indeed blown, my error by not realising there were two. I suppose I still don't know why it blew, which is a slight concern, but for now I am a happy man again. I wont tell my daughter though..
