Sounds like something rotational, a high pitched whine. Almost like an electric motor starting up.
Seems to be when the accelerator is very lightly pressed, as in not to the point of really accelerating the car. The noise happens for a second or two past the time when you release the accelerator?
Anyone have any thoughts about what it could be?

I think you need to give us more information. At what speed(s) does this happen? Can you reproduce the noise at will or is it intermittent? How certain are you that the noise is from the rear? Does the noise vary in different gears/different engine revs? Mike.

Been having a test..
Noise doesn't vary. Havn't noticed it at very low speeds but anything above 25mph or so it is reproducable. Even very slight pressure on the accelerator produces an electric whirring noise for about half a second after you completely lift off.
I'm wondering whether it is the fuel pump as she's had Paramount Performance modifications including fuel pumps. Will ask them.
