convertible top reproofing

Postby mickmoor1 » Sat Jul 01, 2006 3:47 pm

Hi everyone

Just cleaned and reproofed my xk8 with a genuine jaguar kit for the job
I seemed to have had a few problems with the cleaning stuff, it advises that all the bodywork is covered up so i used some old bed sheets and also masked off the windows back and front
I mixed as per instructions with 2 ltrs of warm water put it on and rinsed it off with clean water after removing the cloths, hosed it down a few times and let it dry ????? it was then i was left with white water stains all over the bodywork and the tyres as well i tried to rub them and they seemed reluctant to rub off. :(
It took about 2 hours myself and my wife using another shampoo and a leather etc, so i got a bit worried, glad i covered the whole car up or it could have been a lot worse.
I wonder if anyone else has used the kit done the reproofing now and all looks well mick

I use the Jaguar kit.

I do not bother masking when using the cleaner.

I clean the roof at the same time as I wash the car.

As I clean the sides of the roof some cleaner inevitably finds itself onto the glass/bodywork. These are hosed off immediately and I do not let them dry. This seems to prevent problems as long as you keep the car wet and then wash the bodywork as normal.

As for reproofing, I mask the glass and put the reproofer on with the large brush on top of the roof only. I use smaller brushes and even cotton buds for the fiddly bits.

Any spill is immediately removed with paper towel or polish if it dries.

Seems to work Ok, but I must admit that I hate reproofing the hood.

As you say, though, well worth it, once done.

Hi gasman thanks for the reply i was only keeping to the instructions and as you say it seems that you must not let it dry after rinsing off ,
unfortunatly i had a visitor so i was rushed a bit , and it was warm today so it did dry rather quick, all looks nice now just spent 2 hours with the autogleam and well worth the effort i had to leave the garage door open so i coud keep looking at the finnish sad isnt it ????? :) looking forward to 9th july should be a good day out. :D

Hood care

Postby Steve » Sat Jul 01, 2006 11:22 pm

Mick, have a look at the thread on Hood care in this section. I just used a kit I was sold by a jaguar dealer (it was badged as Lotus but is the Auto Glym set in drag and is much cheaper than the jaguar kit). It sounds a bit different to yours as it comes with two sprays and a sponge. The same instructions apply to keeping it off the body and glass, but I used a piece of card as a mask and had a piece of kitchen roll handy and it looks pretty good. I did wash the car immediately afterwards so taht may have helped. I do have some new water marks that weren't there before so need a bit of practice I guess.

The best price I've seen was from the JDHT. At events like Harewood, the JDHT was selling the Jaguar kits for £5! So, it might be worth asking if you go to Littlecote. Mike.
