Hi Gary,
Dumb question perhaps but have you checked the tyre pressures lately and is there any indication of uneven wear on the tyres?

Second dumb question; have you checked the tyres for good tread across the full face and checked for oil/other contamination?

If tyre pressure is too high less of the rubber may be in contact with the road surface. If uneven wear is evident that may suggest a suspension or wheel alignment issue and contact between the tyre and the road may be reduced.

Next question; with the engine running and the car stationary can you turn the wheel lock to lock using one finger only? There should be some slight resistance, not enough to bend your finger, but if the wheel spins with no resistance at all check the power steering pump.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Cubist

+1 on what Cubist says.
Also knowing exactly what model and year of XK8 you have will help in getting advice.
Andy :)
