Stuck in park

Postby MRPHOOD » Sat Sep 13, 2008 7:58 pm

My car has just decided to stick in park. I can't move the lever. Any ideas?

Hi ,
To get it out of park , remove the torx style plug on the J gate and insert something like a key into the hole to release the gear lever , the fault may rectify itself but may be something like the gear selector interlock or the brake lamp switch ,

Hope this helps ,

Hi

Nik is right about how to release the lever but has omitted the final step.

You MUST remove the tool used to release the lever as soon as the lever moves from P or the thin plastic disc below the module will smash to bits!
Cost £130 + fitting

The fault you have is most likely to be the solenoid fitted to the side of the 'J' Gate Mechanism. This connects to a mecanical lock on the lever.

It took 4 months to resolve a gear link problem when a Jaguar Acredited Repairer failed to read the extract from the Owners Handbook explaining how to release the 'locked' lever!!

Mine does this sometimes and the dealer wasn't sure whether it was the switch or the solenoid, I think I sussed it today... it wouldn't come out of park getting off the ferry at Portsmouth, with my foot on the brake no high level brake light on, tried again same result, tried again light comes on lever comes out of P ...methinks it's the switch
