Auto box staying in first gear - electrical

Postby pbartlett » Fri Oct 26, 2007 10:39 pm

My 2000 V XK8 has started to stick in first gear. It appears to be a J gate selector microswitch problem.

When I move from P to D and drive off, it won't change up.

If I then shift across to 4 then back to D all is well.

I have discovered that when I move straight from P to D the D indicator does not light up. The trick of flicking into 4, then back to D causes the 4 light to light then the D light and all is well.

If I go back to P, I have to repeat the same rigmarole.

I'd like to fix this myself, this is a minor electrical fault - I guess something is loose in the selector mechanism.

Anyone know how I can fix this?

Phil

Hi phil..not an expert by any means..g boxes bit of a black art..friend of mine having probs with his 97 mod..think it has turned out to be the TCM..little black box which controls g box..it lives in a bigger plastic black box under the bonnet left side. He said that when he took the top off(4 anti tamper screws) there was 2'' of water in btm which had got into TCM..might be worthwhile pulling it out and checking contacts..any fault codes? :?

If it is the Transmission control module they can be expensive (I think £800 from a main dealer. They do come up on UK Ebay but you never know what your getting...there is one on US Ebay for $99+shipping but given the exchange rate it's a steal.

Although I'm not usre of any nuances with UK & US specs :?:

If the J gate then they regularly come up on Ebay for around £40 (I know I just won one)...nothing wrong with mine except the top (black bit with the white lettering) had cracked and a complete replacement assembly was the cheapest option.

Good luck

if its the TCM you need to check which one suits your car..in the spare wheel well there is a sticker which tells you all the numbers of the different modules usedin the car. mine (1999) has 3 letters then 2401 AB but earlier cars use a 2400 ..I'm not sure about 2000 cars but if you check the number I know a guy has a 2401 for sale (he bought it by mistake for his 97)
