Fuel Consumption

Postby PTR200Jag » Wed Dec 24, 2014 3:24 pm

Well, as I have now done over 500 miles, just over two weeks down the line from buying the beast, travelled around towns, down motorways, over hill and dale the average fuel consumption is now sitting at 22.5 mpg.

Is this about right? I am quite pleased as it is better than I expected. 8)

This is in sport mode mostly as it seemed to be more economical in that than standard! :o :o

Motorways have been cruised at somewhere between 70 and ( ahem) a little higher than that officer

Average speed around 33 mph.

That sounds acceptable, especially during the initial period when it makes perfect sense to keep trying the sport button as part of the learning process (ahem!). Long runs at legalish speeds should show significant improvements to 26/27mpg without trying too hard. Like all vehicles, it's cold starts that play havoc with the figures. Mike.

I'm really surprised that you folks can get that kind of fuel consumption, I've just been reading the XKR article in the new (Jan 2015) JEC magazine and Paul Skilleter tells us that they weighed over 3500Kg, so that figure is truly impressive :? My Super V8 is only half of that weight and I get similar consumption figures :D
My Insurance for recovery has a 3500Kg limit so would not be eligible and I'm not sure you should even be driving these XK's on a standard driving licence!

I don't think those weight figures can be right! Surely an XKR can't weigh as much as a fully loaded Transit or more than twice as much as an X350!!
The figures in the magazine perhaps are lbs confused with Kgs?
According to Jag-Lovers.org the maximum kerb weight of an XKR convertible is 1824 kgs or 4,021lbs

Yes David, I was just trying to make light of the typo in the mag, in an otherwise excellent article by Paul
Skilleter!
As you say, someone has got their lbs and kilos mixed up - perhaps it's the editing software which is too clever for it's own good?
I think PTR will be pleasantly surprised at the mpg figures (not litres per Km!!) when he gets out on a decent long run in some better weather.

The trouble with the media / government in this country is the perception that the general public are ACTUALLY using THEIR metric system.

Kg are a pain as are litres of fuel instead of gallons (oil barrels are in gallons albeit foreign ones!) and the real PITA is the media news reports using kilometres for distances ...

Heelllooo, we STILL use MILES on our speedometers and MILES to calculate distances, our road signs are in miles, we still calculate MPG in errr, oh, miles per gallon...

WTF are they trying to do to us?......

Oh dear, sorry, I must still be in soapbox mode from Bah Humbug day...... must go and put the turkey in the oven..

Hello everybody,

My car is a left hand drive and most of its use is on the continent, usually on French motorways. We manage 22 to 25 mpg usually and once an impressive 29 mpg.

As for max velocity, I can report (like most others I suspect) that the Jag makes a mockery of speed limits and have achieved highly illegal speeds very close to the reported top speed, again in France before they fell in love with speed cameras. Time and time again it used to be that if you were driving at 130 kph you’d be the slowest car on the autoroute.

Ireland changed over to kilometres in 2005 and not once in all our journeys there (we have Irish relations) have I ever heard one person moan or complain about the change over; equally I have not seen a news article in Ireland about someone being done for speeding blaming it on the mph to kph changeover. If the Irish can do it I’m sure the UK can too, or perhaps the issue has been buried until after to European Union referendum.

The speed limit on the river Thames is posted as 8kph; go figure.
I've yet to see a speed log calibrated in kilometres.

Although this post started life as a simple mpg enquiry, we seem to have opened a can of worms (454 grams perhaps and may contain nuts) about this whole issue of imperial and metric units. I agree with PTR and would hate to see us have to spend unnecessary millions on changing signs all over Britain. You might well quote Ireland as an example but on a cycling holiday there, we came across a sign which actually read 'No dumping of rubbish, maximum penalty £1000 or 1187 Euros' - so even they have missed the point somewhat! You can probably tell I am an Engineer and still work to a 'thou or two'. 0.02 mm just doesn't cut it for me.

Hmmm, opened a can of worms, definitely !

Anyway the very last update on the fuel side of things.
Just done an M6 / M56 run to Manchester airport in 60mph gusting winds plus rain, sun, hail...... plague locusts/frogs etc.

Four up, YES ! four !! plus boot load of luggage, dumped the spare wheel and the tools to make room  for more than two sets of golf clubs

Average consumption was around 18mpg after a load of faffing around towns this week and the speed average dropped to 27mph... by the time I returned today with around 100 miles of motoring, 75 on the motorway, the rest on the back lanes, the average consumption has gone to 23mpg and the speed average to 40mph.
Cruising at (ahem) around 2400rpm the instant fuel readout was fluctuating around 40mpg, down to 30 and up to 50 on the up/down hill bits.

I realise that these readouts are subject to some "interesting" readings and they are by no means definitive but it gives me something to aim for !

Well pleased ! AND the unleaded price has dropped to 107.9 around mine, as of 9th January

I have now had the car all of four weeks and the point of this thread was to see if the mpg was reasonable which gives me some indication on the state of the engine.
Stuck the tape on now...
