Tensioners on replacement engine?

Postby KevRen » Sun Jul 10, 2011 4:09 pm

Hello all

I'm wondering again about chains and tensioners and, using the websites new archive was able to find illustrated step by step instructions for replacing the latter. Looks fairly straightforward as long as you are methodical and do as you're told! However, my engine was replaced in June 2003 and I was hoping it might have the last generation tensioners (and waterpump?) fitted. I have a service record from HA Fox of Nottingham which includes the engine number on the invoices for the work done. However the engine number on invoices pre- and post-engine change are the same. Is it possible to find the engine number anywhere else? I can't find the green replacement engine tag, although I'm not exactly sure where on the engine to look.

Thanks

Kevin

The easiest way of checking which generation of tensioners are fitted would be to take off the cam covers and take a look , that way you can be 100% sure they are the all metal jobs  ,

Hope this helps ,

i have to agree, whip a cover off and check, that way you will 100% sure, allow an hour for one side, and careful not to drop the one cam cover bolt that is not captive!!

Thanks very much for the advice. :D Will I need to replace gaskets/sealant if I'm just whipping the cover off briefly? If so, where is the best place to get these from? Also, I've now been frightened by the non-captive bolt issue! What is that all about?!

Cheers

it's some time since I did one of these, but the bolts that hold the cam cover on are 10mm from memory, all are captive in the cam cover bar one on the cars I have done, again from memory it is one of the rear two, the lower one I think, the first car I did as i pulled the cam cover off this bolt made a bid for freedom, lucliky i caught it in time, not having done a huge number of these, someone who does them all the time or has done one recently will be able to confirm if I am correct or not

I had to replace cam cover gaskets 2 years ago

As Rob says there is one of the rear bolts not captive - I missed it on the LHS Cover & never found it - I only know it never went into the engine!

I also had a happy find - my 4.0 engine had the 4.2 Chains & Tensioners!

On the LHS you will need to get your Dremel out & cut a slot in the Dip Stick tube bracket to release it (do not pull tube off engine as I believe it's a pig to get back in place) & remember to clean off all the swarf before removing cover.

The latest water pump is 2 parts and has an extra 2 bolts (making 7) holding the assembly together, the older pump is a single casting.

Each variation of the Engine (not just 4.0 & 4.2 but the earlier version of the 4.0) has different gaskets & don't forget to replace the VT actuator seals if they are located through the cam cover.

Good Luck

Many thanks for the advice. I think I will take off the covers for inspection this winter. Then at least if the job needs doing I won't lose valuable driving time whilst doing te job. :)
