Hi All,
After my XK8 Blew it's N's (due to Ford's Chelmsford failing to put Oil in it after a service... but can I prove that?... Grrrr) - I acquired a new engine.
A friend of mine is fitting it, but has a couple of simple questions before he starts swapping bits around:-
1. Are the Tappets Shimmed' or Hydraulic
2. The replacement engine has cam timing sensors on the outside of the Head, whilst the old engine had them mounted inside the head. Are the connectors/wiring the same and compatible?
Please let me know ASAP as I need to get this back on the road (the S type is OK... but nothing like the XK8!)
Cheers,
Paul

the tappets are not ' shimmed ,
however, i think you are trying to replace an AJ26 version engine with an AJ27 ( newer version ) engine
there are many mechanical and electrical differences between these engines ,and one wont work on the others systems
the most obvious ones are the individual plug coils, the new engine will have four wire coils, you old/existing one will have 2 wire coils, the VVT sensors ( the ones you mention ) have a different configuration along with different plugs and looms , which you will have to change.....
the throttle body will also be fully electronic, and not partial , you will have to change the whole engine loom......
but the most important thing will be the engine ECU ( or ECM as Jaguar call it )
this will not work on the different engine, so one MUST come with it, and then it will need taking to Jag to let it talk to the body module and gearbox module , the car simply wont start otherwise
Hope this is of some help, and not too much bad news

Hi Paul ,
Be very careful !!!!!!!! Not all XK8 engines are directly interchangeable , and likewise XJ and S Type V8's may be very diffferent !!! you may find that different VVT positions may be the least of your problems , you will need to check your vehicles engine number against the replacement engines number to find out if they are even vaguely interchangeable
What year engine is the replacement ? the early AJV8 is quite different to the later version partly caused by Jaguar needing to improve emissions , unless your friend is fully conversant with Jaguar V8's ( worked for a main agent or a specialist ) get help from an expert
Try contacting Kevin at DesignXKR as he will prove to be both knowledgeable and helpful ,
Best of Luck ,
Nik
EDIT I see that BB types a lot quicker than me !!!!!!!!!
