Hesitant Engine

My MY 2000 XK8 coupe suffers from a hiccup when I blip the throttle at idle. Insted of the revs rising, the revs fall before rising. This is frustrating when pulling away and I think is causing reduced performance.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

Tony

Start with the simple stuff, try cleaning carefully the throttle body and/or the airflow sensor. If you search (see red search link above) the bulletin board for 'throttle body', I recall there was a helpful link to another well illustrated website describing these tasks. Mike.

Well thanks so much Mike. I've just completed cleaning the throttle body and mass air flow (MAF) sensor . I did the work one step at a time with road tests of about 5 miles in between.

1) Cleaned throttle body with Wynns Carb & Fuel Injection cleaner. Road test showed no improvement
2) Cleaned the MAF sensor with Halfords Electrical Contact Cleaner. The engine initially ran poorly as if missing. The reduced performance warning was on and I was wondering why I ever started the work. However, after about a mile, the fault cleared. Amazing! My old car is back. Not only does the car have much improved mid range pull, but the gearchanges are smoother and timed perfectly.

To sum it up, this has not only improved the engine, but for some reason, what I thought was a tired gearbox is now working beautifully.

Once again. Thanks Mike & JEC.

Hi Tony,
Glad it worked for you. In these days of highly complicated vehicles it's so easy to fear the worst and overlook the simple things but fortunately, the simple things can still hold the key. Mike. :D
