Restricted performance light

Can anyone help my car randomly displays restricted performance while driving no particular pattern for this has happened a few times now. The car does not change performance and i have been unable to read any codes. Once car is locked up and left a while the light goes out until the next time any suggestions would be useful. Can you leave the code reader connected while driving to try and catch a code when it nexts comes on. ??

Without a code and no obvious signs of a problem, it will be difficult to be sure of anything. It certainly won't do any harm to run with the code reader connected and it should identify something to give a steer in the right direction.

2 year old battery should be ok, agree try leaving code reader connected whilst running and see if it catches anything. Codes should stay stored though, so don’t understand why nothing showing up.

In order to get something meaningful from your request you need to supply some basic information
Is your car an X100/X150 or a completely different model to the Modern XK Range?
What is the Model Year - or you need to supply the last 6 characters of the alpha-numeric VIN (most useful)
What Code Reader are you using - Traditionally, the iCarsoft & Launch units at the affordable end have proven to be the best for the XK range. I have not seen any data (on Jaguar compatibility) on Code readers that have come to the market in say the last 5 years or so. Most of the earlier ones cannot interrogate all of the Jaguar systems (some will only read the Engine Management system!)
On the X100 series the complexity of the Diagnostic System went from basic in the early years to quite complex at the end.
With regard to the Battery, you don't give details of Make or Specification. A cheep battery can fail well before 2 years & quality batteries are less likely to fail at/or before 2 years

Car is a 1998 x100 convertible the code reader I’m using is CAN OBD II memoscan. The battery is a quality on from Halfords constantly on C Tec trickle charge car is not used on a regular basis and has not failed recently so unsure if its related to lack of use and some kind of electrical issue on engine management system i need a code i guess before i can progress

Yes I agree. If you have a good local Jaguar independent they should have much better equipment to interrogate the car for you. As stated above, the earlier cars had much more basic systems, I purchased the icarsoft when I had an X150 and it was very useful, saved me quite a bit over 3 years, but it is useless on my 98 X100.
