Knock and crank sensor

Postby Mini » Thu May 23, 2024 10:57 am

I have recently bought a 99 XK8 which has restricted performance light on and runs poorly.

The fault codes are
P0336 Crank position Sensor A circuit range performance
P1111 - I understand this may not be relevant but not sure
P1646 - I understand as Lambda Heater not working - I understand this would not create the restricted performance and poor running
P1648 - Knock sensor ECM self test failure

I understand that my problems are likely to be Crank and Knock sensor related. There are no misfire codes oddly.

On the Crank the Previous owner said (and I believe him) that he changed the crankshaft sensor initially for Aftermarket then genuine Jag new part. Neither made any difference.

On the knock sensor he bought a second ECU cloned it and installed - No change. I have check continuity from Bank 1 knock sensor to pin on harness end and its good. I have not got to wiring from the harness connection to the ECU yet. Pulling the Knock sensors both show 200 Ohms but I don't have a multimeter for AC voltage low enough to see if it generates when knocking it.

I have cleaned up the knock sensor surfaces to Engine but again nothing changed.

A bit stuck now. Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Since the car is displaying a series of supposedly different fault codes (possible but not likely true), have you considered whether it possible that the source of the problem is wiring related rather than actual component failures? Water damage to the ECU loom would seem to be the most obvious and not unknown place to start looking. Unfortunately, as you probably appreciate, acquiring a car in this state does mean you have to be thoroughly methodical and check out each affected circuit. Equally, unless you've tested something yourself, it can be dangerous to rely upon someone else's assurances that they have already eliminated particular components. Go back to square one, work your way through testing components and their related circuitry and you will find the problem, even if it does take a while! Good luck. Mike.

Thanks Mike

It seems the engine loom joins a loom which presume ends at the ECU but on the way appears to go through the firewall into the interior of the car then back out by the ECU. Am I correct and is there an easy way to inspect the piece inside the car ?

Thanks

Ah I see it runs along a plastic duct which is proving to be difficult to open.

A couple questions if anyone can help

On the knock sensors the wiring after the sensor harness seems to go into a shielded cable. Am I right in thinking that the outside is earth and the inside is positive ? Presumably I need to check for continuity on both + & - ?

On the crank sensor which is the cable that goes down to the sensor. I currently can get under the car so am trying to trace it from the top.

Thanks in advance

Without a similar car on hand to check, it's difficult to respond to your two most recent questions. However, I'd recommend dropping David Marks (our technical guru for the X100 models) an email (david@davidmarksgarages.co.uk). He works on them constantly and would be an excellent person to consult about any X100 electrical issues. Mike.
