OIL GRADES

Postby david340 » Sat Sep 19, 2009 7:09 pm

Hi,

Out of interest, just wondered what oil grades are people using in their XK8's ie 10/40 or 5/40 etc etc.

Mine had a recent service with last owner in August and has a semi synth in it, I believe 10/40 grade.

Just wondering if his is the best grade / suitable for the car.

XK8 standard, 10,000 miles factory exchange steel lined unit.

Cheers, Dave.

I use Magnatec 10/40 in my '97 ( nikasil ), the previous owner also used 10/40. This year it used 0.5litre in 4,600 miles, I'm happy.

We'll watch and learn. Tony.

Jaguar recommends different oil grades for different operating conditions. 10W/40 is only recommended for warmer climates than the UK's. 5W/30 or 0W/40 are more appropriate here. 10W/40 may be somewhat viscous during a chilly UK winter. To look after the engine, always ensure that whichever oil you use has the correct engine oil approvals (eg API SJ/EC, ACEA A1-98, ACEA A3-98 were listed for early XK8s). For maximum protection, these approvals are just as, if not more, important than the grade. Mike.

Thanks for the advice, not sure what grade I have as it was serviced prior to me buying the car from the private owner.

Receipt describes the oil as semi synthetic but no grade mentioned !
