Hi ................ I have a 2003 XK8 convertible & recently the pre-ignition system check "chimes" have stopped! I know it's not a matter of life or death but I can't find any reference to the chimes (or lack of chimes) in the handbook or on this forum. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Re: Pre-ignition System Check "Chimes"
Somebody has to be the first to have a particular fault on their car and to the best of my memory this is the first time anyone has mentioned having a 'silent' car. As usual with modern cars, there are many possibilities. If all the bongs have disappeared (door open etc) the sounder or its wiring could have failed. However, most, if not all of the bongs are due to messages which are passed by the body processor module so the latter could be at fault. Before resorting to a diagnostic scan, I would be tempted to try the one action applying to all computer based machines, i.e. disconnect the power (release the negative battery lead) for an hour and then reconnect it. There are some minor market variations for warning bongs which can be switched on and off either by dealer level or factory level diagnostic equipment and as such, it's possible that disconnection and reconnection could return the system to its base level. Just don't forget to find your radio code first and to reset the driver and passenger window drops afterwards. Mike.

Thanks for you prompt reply Mike ............... I've just carried out the battery disconnection/connection as you suggested to no avail
.................the only "bong" left seems to be the valet button!
I'll get it investigated at leisure maybe the next service!

Shame the simplest and cheapest of possible solutions didn't work. It will be good to know the final outcome. Mike.

I've got my 'bongs' back!................ Today I tried to adjust my drivers seat position a tad but it wouldn't move. So, first stop fusebox ................. fuse No1 (20amp drivers seat control module) had popped. On replacing the fuse not only did I have an adjustable seat once more but unexpectedly I got my 'bongs' back!

The next question is why did the fuse blow...? Mike.

I'm hoping it was just old age & infirmity
I'll monitor it & if it blows again it's back to investigatory mode............. me not the car!
