Hi ,
First job is to check the actual oil pressure with a mechanical oil pressure gauge , if all is then well it must be an electrical problem , if you have really low oil pressure on an otherwise good engine I'd check the pressure relief valve is not sticking open ,

Hope this is helpful ,

Duff oil pressure senders are not unknown.

Substitution of a new unit may also give an indication of a lubrication pressure problem whether is be a s Nik suggests a stuck or badly seating relief valve or perhaps an issue with the oil pick up pipe.

The later 4.2 had an improved oil pick up pipe which helps.

One other point comes to mind. The 4 litre cars fitted with the earlier design of pipe, really do need to have their oil levels kept up. Failure to do so often leads to oil starvation of the No 1 main crank bearing if the car is cornered hard.

In the event of main bearings being worn, Racing Green can supply oversize bearing sets to enable a crank to be reground. The contact is Colin Bowler at RG. Jaguar do not supply oversize bearing sets which has in the past lead to owners having to buy a complete new crank and appropriate bearing set.

The 'gauge' is only an indicator as the sender is a switch does not relay the oil pressure!

I seem to remember someone was looking into making the gauge do a proper job & indicate the actual pressure but I've heard no more.
