Ipod or Mp3 conection to audio unit

Hi every people's

i am new to the club and in the next few days be picking up my first XK8.
i already driver a X-type (02) and find the sound system very good. but i have quite often wondered if you could connect an Ipod or MP3 player to the sound system.
somebody must do it somewhere.
i have seen the usual tape adapter connection but if it can be done properly it would be so much better.

as a matter of interest do the new jags still come with CD changer or has the car market realised that CD's are getting old hat. bearing in mind many people download music now. even a CD changer that can read MP3 file from a CD would massively increase the storage capacity in a six CD changer.

Firstly Congrats on obtaining an XK8.

The unit you linked to indicates its only compatible with s-types. Be careful, when I was looking to add Ipod & Phone I found multiple simular devices but none were compatible with my 99 XK8.

I wanted to use an IPod but also my Mobile Phone (Without lots of additional screans and buttons on the dash). So I replaced the head unit with one that controled and charged an Ipod whilst providing Bluetooth phone control (and all the other things an after market headunit can offer). My IPod now lives in the glovebox.

I used componants from the same website you linked to to make it work with the steering wheel controls and blend it into the dash.

Will just add my thoughts, although it may not be quite what you are after. I recently fitted a Parrot MKi9200 to my XK8 for £249. I wanted iPOD connectivity through the stereo but wasn't bothered about using volume controls on the steering wheel. I am absolutely thrilled with it, it has exceeded my expectations and I can't remember the last time some technology did that. It is connected into the back of the stereo (don't ask me how, I am not interested in that sort of thing, - it was installed for free where I bought it, in just an hour and a half). Because I chose to have my ipod connection in the centre arm rest there is only one small hole drilled in this compartment, not visible from the outside. No other holes or wires showing. The MKi9200 also does hands free phone via blue tooth. This is particularly impressive. Phone comes out over the stereo speakers, radio/ipod fades out when you have an incoming call or when you press a button to make a call. My favourite feature is the voice recognition - works every time. I can call someone by pressing a button and never taking my eyes off the road - brilliant. Also if I am on a call and approach the car, once I turn the ignition on the call automatically transfers over to handsfree via the stereo speakers.

There is also a small screen which displays your music tracks, play lists etc etc. This is how you control your choice of music from your ipod. I have located mine in the centre of the dashboard under the clock and it is not too intrusive. The little controller is by the gear selector.
This probably isn't as elegant or clever as Smoggy's solution. however I wanted to keep the look of the original Jaguar stereo facia. Also I can very simply remove the parrot to a different car with no damage and the interior will still be completely original (save for a small unseen hole in the arm rest box). Also I can select my music on the ipod by looking at the screen, rather than dropping my eyes completely down to the front of the stereo which I guess is what you have to do with Smoggy's solution? I know I probably sound like an advert for the Parrot, apologies for that but I am really pleased with it!

thanks for the info chaps. the parrot system looks good for the price.
the system Hellcat talks about sound excellent. i'll be looking in to both.
i may go for the parrot version in my X-type (daily car) at first.

i am new to this BB but i think this is the way to post images.

if this works there should be some pictures of my car.
if i've got it right.

First upload pictures to the gallary.
go to gallary find your pictures
then open picture in the gallary right click and click "copy image URL"
then come back to the massage body. click on the IMG box below. then paste the copied URL after the Img and then click the img box again and /img will apear after the url.

ok let try this and see if it works

as you can see from the picture in my previous posts i have the sat nav fitted in the upper part of the dash.
i am not sure how this work as it is still at alpine being repaired.
i haven't seen any others like this. is this a common fitting.
the previous owner reckons it was factory fitted.

one of the thing i will be looking in to is the possibility of including an audio connection to this bit as the remote has audio controls.

any body know if that is possible.

(must get a new keyboard the question mark key dose not work)
