Having joined the merry band of trac not available/asc not available/abs not available brothers and sisters I am wondering where i can find this BCM (Body Control Module?) box to check the solder joints. I've changed the battery to no effect. I've also got coolant level low but I'm not sure if this is connected since I fitted a new sensor. Thanks. Alan

Hi Alan,
Unfortunately, without using the JDS or Autologic systems to diagnose the fault, it's not possible to be certain that the car has a dodgy circuit board joint. Equally, the issue could be sensor or wiring related. So, before trying to open the module which is part of the ABS unit I'd advise getting a firm diagnosis. I'd recommend someone like Dave Marks at Nottingham who is extremely good at sorting these issues. Mike.

One of things that you can check yourself is the integrity of the ABS sensors and their wiring connections. It's a fairly easy job to check the seating of the sensors in the hubs, the plug on the sensors and then the wiring connections back to the loom. Also check the connections on the main abs module, again, an easy check.

In my case, it was previously severed wiring from one of the rear sensors which had been scotchlocked and wrapped up in insulating tape. I remade the connections with properly soldered bullet connectors and all my problems diappeared!

It's worth looking at urgently. In my case, I realised that if the lights were on then the abs was genuinely not functioning. A lockup of the wheels in sudden braking made me find teh time to get out there and fix the problem!

I still haven't got around to getting a refurbished Brake Control Module fitted, but I genuinely believe the dodgy solder on the printed circuit board is the cause of my problems.

When the engine gets too warm during long stop/start drives, the problem comes up and only clears when the engine bay has cooled sufficiently.

Had the car in for MOT last week... turned up 1 hour 20 early with the warning on... sat in the carpark with the bonnet up until my allotted test time, restarted and all clear!

20 minutes of MOT testing later, it had passed... as I drove out the door, the warning came back on again! That'll do me for another year (however the rear tyres are taking the real brunt of the problem, if you know what I mean )

I had a similar problem on my 4litre V8 S-type.

A make and break connection between the inner face of the plug socket and the Throttle Actuator Control module. I had to replace the entire throttle. The TAC module was in a sealed aluminium case within the body and production matched with the stepper motor. No hope of a repair possible.

E-bay to the rescue! £20 secondhand, in perfect working order. Well chaffed with the purchase. A new throttle would have been £1200 plus vodka and tonic!
