XKR Central Locking Problem

Recently when I operated the central (un)locking command from the key fob it resulted in the door locks actuating on their own three or four times before finally unlocking. That situation lasted a few days but then was replaced by complete inaction when I operated the key fob. (I am sure that the battery in the fob is still ok because it can still be used to silence the alarm and to flash the indicators when you go through the remote locking routine with the fob). However I cannot now lock/unlock the door remotely at all and have to use the manual lock on the driver's door.

The car is the convertible model and that means that, of course, I now have to ensure that the driver's window is nearly closed before I get out so that the glass can move up under the rubber seal when I shut the door. But the same problem means that when I try to get back in the glass is already under the seal and I have to force the door open.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? Is there fix other than an expensive visit to a Jaguar dealer!

I've only had this beautiful car for a few weeks and hope my experiences are not early indicators of unreliability.

It might be worth checking the security system fuse. I always remove mine when on ferries - to disarm the alarm - but the effect is exactly as you describe with the locks (although the alarm does not sound!). It's in the boot/trunk fuse box - rear RH side.

press any buttons after the batteries have been removed i have listed the programming details just in case you need them.


Remote Reprogramming Instructions: xk8/r
Hold the high beam flash on.
Place key in ignition, turn to position 1.
Operate the flash 4 to 5 times.
You will probably not hear the chime as it can be very faint., but the red LED will light briefly on the J-gate.
Press any button on the remote once, you will see the same LED on the
J- gate flash again.

Turn key off and remove from ignition before operating the remote again. Remote should now be programmed. mick

I tried the re-programming fix and checked the security circuit fuse. Did all that you said it would but has not solved the problem. Hence I have to conclude that it may be something more fundamental like sensor switches, relays, etc. That expensive visit to the Jaghuar garage looms larger every day!

Hi O dear sounds very much like it could be the door locking module looks very much like as you say its a visit to a main dealer Or you could try putting a posting on the non members section of the xkec/r club forum there are a lot of clever people on the including 2 xk traders that do all sorts of mods and i am sure that they could give a better answer to the probs so log on to and follow the instructions best of luck

I also had a problem with central locking on my 96 XK8. Not identical but after using key to open hood from outside car, sequence was interrupted and I closed the hood manually. After this, the central locking remote tried to lock the doors twice, then left them open. Also key would not work at all. The door module seemed to be confused, so I removed the 25 Amp fuse in the drivers side facia fuse box which feeds the drivers door module, then replaced it after a minute or so. Problem solved! I only did the drivers side since key was not working, but there is a fuse for the passenger door module on the other side.

I have just experienced the same problem on my 2000 XKR... started with the open/close clicking when unlocking then eventually fob refused to unlock. Had to manually lock passenger door then use key to lock and unlock drivers door. But still needed to use fob to cancel the alarm on opening.
I have followed the previous instructions - removed the 25amp fuse from drivers fascia fuse box waited a couple of mins then replaced it (actually it may have been longer than 2 mins as I dropped the fuse inside the trim so had to go and find a spare!). Lock immediately did a couple of clicks (lock/unlock) and now it seems fine and locks and unlocks from the fob.
I then did have problem with window dropping each time I opened the drivers door so followed instructions elsewhere on forum.... press window switch till window fully down - keep pressing till window 'clicks' then press switch till window fully closed and keep pressing till it clicks... seems sorted.
Aren't car electrics wonderful - when they work!

John, mine is a 2000MY also. I wonder if you have ever replaced your battery and/or if you make a lot shortish journeys which puts more demand on the battery.
If you have not changed it, I think you ought to - 9 years in an electrical power hungry car is not a bad record.
Even if this does not cure your present problem, it does eliminate one possible reason.

I have not changed the battery and cannot see any documentary evidence of it ever being changed - I will need to look at the battery itself later.
However a battery problem could explain the issue as the open/close clicking always seems to occur after the car has been left on its lonesome for a few days - so low battery power could be the issue.
My car is actually a 2001 model (My computer keyboard is apparently a poor typist - I will need to change if for a better educated model! ) - but it could still make the battery old like me ...

I will check the age of the battery and report back.

Can anybody tell which is the security fuse? I have just had my XK8 2002 h/t checked by a jag specialist as the remote fob was not working. The diagnostic test showed no fault on the security module so he is going to substitute it for a good known one. Using the key everything is fine

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am a newbie to jaguars
