Gear selector stuck in Park

About 18 months ago I started having a problem with the gear selector, I couldn't move it out of Park no matter how many times I put my foot on the brake.

Most annoying when you pull up at a level crossing select Park while you wait for the train to pass then see the traffic disappear into the distance while you struggle to get the thing into Drive.

It appears the computer monitors the brake pedal and when you have your foot on the brake it then allows you to select your gear.

Fault was the brake light switch, apparently a known fault. Had it changed and everything works fine.

Also a little tip read the manual as the fancy little cover at the side of the gear selection lever is a hole you can put your key in to release the lever from Park if you have the same problem, then start the car in Neutral.

Thanks for the tips. How come there are these known faults yet all the people I've talked didn't know about them until they learned first hand. Like my water pump failing, (see coolant topic).
