2006 jaguar xk ctek charging help

Postby leelane588 » Sat Sep 02, 2023 5:28 pm

Hello

I have a 2006 jaguar xk that I have connected eyelets so I can charge via ctek when not in use

My question is once car is locked and shutdown can I charge straight away or do I need to wait any time before turning ctek on ?

Thanks in advance

Hi, I have a 2005 X350 and I switch my ctek on before locking usually. So I suppose it doesn't make any difference whether you start charging before or after.

Agreed, no need to wait.

I have just purchased a ctek to help with maintaining a charge on a relatively new battery for my 2006 XK 150.
Unfortunately I do not have a mains supply in my garage so have to resort to running a long extension lead which is not easy.
My problem is that the charge on my new battery can run down from 100% to 75% in just 3 days with the car not used and locked. Is this normal?
Is it possible for there to be a drain somewhere in the system. If so where?
Thanks Frank Hollis

Are you double locking the car, ie pressing the button twice? This is necessary to shut down all the systems. If so, and there are no internal lights on then there is no reason it should drain so fast. Presume you have no other accessories connected to the car? I am not certain if the accessory 12v socket, for example, switches off completely or remains live.

It depends on what fully charged voltage value you use to measure your percentage readings and whether you are including the post charging, but misleading, Surface Charge that gives a false value to the full charge voltage for some hours. So if you're using a voltage of over, say 12.65v as the 100% figure, that might account for your significant drop.

WIth the car locked and fully shut down electrically, (that takes about 20 mins) the drain current should be no more than 30 mA. Is that something you can check?

Hi Frank, I use the Ring Automotive Smart Charger to maintain my X-150 whilst it is in the garage over winter - and at other times if I am not using the car for a period. The Ring Automotive unit has the LCD screen to show the various states of the battery and it routinely does not show 100% after the battery is more than 1 year old. Instead maxxing out at 90%.

On first connecting up, even after a decent run, the charger will show battery condition at 60%, which seems to be a default starting point - even whilst on the charger and left for a while it can be showing 90%, but if I unlock the car it will immediately show 60% on the screen and restart the charging process. This, I understand, is because the charger does not simply "float" the battery level at a constant (as would be the case with a standard battery charger), but instead "cycles" the battery to maintain it. When the above operation takes place, the rise from the 60% default to 90% standard is undertaken swiftly, meaning the battery is not truly at 60% charge.

Consequently, unless you are following the calculations as described by Astromorg above, I would not be overly concerned about screen readouts on battery condition. However, in addition to the double locking as advised by Andy (press the fob lock button twice and receive a chirp from the car to advise double locking completed) you should place the keys at least 20 feet (6m) from the car and preferably store them in a Faraday box or pouch - which is a security aspect as well to prevent relay theft. If the keys are closer than the notional 20 feet, then the car stays "awake", anticipating you heading off somewhere.

If you are concerend about the long extension cable, there are solar powered battery conditioners available these days so perhaps you could investigate those as an alternative.

I do double lock the car at all times and I have a 'Clarke' CBBT1 bluetooth battery monitor permantly connected across the battery terminals to monitor on my iPhone. Is that good practice?

I have a battery monitor a good bit of kit the drain from that is minimal take a screenshot over a three day or five day SoC and a shot of the voltage and post on here. Has the battery been changed in the sounder or a new sounder fitted easer option as this is a common sauce of battery drain. With your monitor you will see just how much draw on the battery just by opening the door as the car wakes up.

Hi.
Thank you all for your helpful replies.
I have charged the XK with the CTEK and found it is most successful.
I have just had the car serviced at Swallows Jaguar for another reason and they measured the battery drain current to be 20m/A which is within Jaguar specification so I'm happy with that.
However, on the way back from Somerset I was subjected to some dreadful weather conditions; rain, sleet and lots of spray. Since then my parking sensors have gone completely random and just cannot be relied upon. Would the water spray have caused this and is there anyway to correct this. Or is it another expensive trip to a Jaguar agent.
Thanks
Frank

Parking sensors begin their lives waterproofed but they can and do fail with age. Occasionally, after a dousing and apparent failure, they will begin working again for a short while. However, the permanent cure is more likely to be replacement of the one, or more, failed sensors. Dependent upon which sensor(s) has failed, it may be necessary to remove the bumper for access to replace the failed unit. Mike.

Hi. Fortunately the rear parking sensors are working correctly now so I presume it was the soaking in water that caused the problem. Fingers crossed!

Re: 2006 jaguar xk error message

Postby frankhollis395 » Tue Mar 04, 2025 5:30 pm

HI. For no apparent reason I have just got an error message "check pedestrian system" on my 2006 XK series 150.
I have not 'nudged' the front of the car and have carried out a visual inspection of the bonnet air bags and can see nothing untoward.
The message went away for a short while but is back again.
Not wishing to spend a fortune at my local Jaguar dealer, any suggestions ?
Thanks
Frank Hollis
