Front Fogs lights not working controle module with tell tale for fog lights not working

Postby daylawrence » Wed Oct 17, 2018 3:04 pm

Hi, apologies if this topic has been covered, I have scanned this forum but could not see anything on the subject. I recently took my Jaguar XKR 2003 for an MOT and it failed principally because the
tell tale
in the controle module unit for the rear fog light was not illuminated. The switch is situated beneath the radio unit and the controle module has six buttons and from left to right these are:- DSC, passenger heated seat, front fog lights, rear fog lights, drivers heated seat and hazard warning light.

I noted that the rear fog lights worked as do the heated seats and the hazard warning light. But the front fog lights do not work.

The controle module illuminates only when the hazard lights switch are turned on the remaining dsc, heated seats and fog lights are not illuminated [n.b. when the obligatory lights are switched on, the dashboard illuminates all esential switches including those of the control module mentioned in either the on or off position].

I picked up on another jaguar form that it could be the fuse that operates the front fogs is also for the car alarm sounder. The solution was to look into the front drivers side tyre well, take off the inspection cover to access the front lights and locate the battery back up for the cars alarm, which houses two nicad batteries. Apparently these batteries corrode over time and eventually cause an earth problem which shorts out the fuse [number 3*]. The solution is to tape up these wires, install a fresh fuse and away you go, tell tales working and front fog lights too.On checking I found that it looks like the battery back up has been removed as I can only find a spare +- wire which was taped up.

Other information is that I notice both fuses for the front and rear fogs looked blown so I replaced them but no change, tell tales on console unit are not working and the front fogs are not working.

Can anyone help please. I dont have access to a plug in diagnostic but that is my next port of call unless anyone knows why this is happening.

The dashboard switches are fitted with LEDs which indicate when the switches are in use. Unfortunately, as these cars age, it's not uncommon for the LED tell-tales which each take their power from the switch to fail. The usual solution is to replace the switch unit with a new (may be difficult to source) or second hand unit. The fact that you suspect someone has already messed with the car's wiring for the front fogs, it may be better to bite the bullet and get the car diagnosed with the appropriate kit, if only to find out how many electrical issues exist. However, the front fog lamp bulbs are not easy to access so, unless you have checked, don't rule out the simple possibility that both bulbs have blown and that may be the cause of their non-operation! Hi
What was the result of your findings? Was it the switch panel? I have exactly the same problem. All buttons work except the front fog lights but none of the led's come on at all.
The fog lights work in that if i bridge the relay they come on so the relay is not getting its signal from the button

I am assuming it is the switch pack as onecr i removed it and checked the led's one has definitely gone although not the fog light one. I will be interested to know how you solved the problem
