Starter trouble

OK Guys, here's the classic one!! Can't get my 1998 XK8 out of the brick built, dark and cramped Garage. Put the fully recharged battery back in after the winter break, and the starter spins but wont engage. I must admit that I tried to turn the engine over back in December but the battery wouldn't have it; the starter just ground to a halt. Thought of giving the Solenoid a thump with a hammer. The Problem is I can't see the starter from above , and crawling on the floor between the wall and the lawn mower I can't see the starter from behind the front wheel and from the front i can't see past the steering rack. Any ideas ....rocking and pushing is out due to Auto box I assume? The strater does Sound a Little gritty.....or have i stripped the gear? Thanks for any other tip ( when you've all stopped laughing!) Steve.

Stick it in neutral and move it out of the garage so you can gain better access. :D

Everything's under control! Starter was actually engaging (exhaust pressure), but no Response from engine. Definately very strange....never experianced this in 5 years. I hope this was just fuel lines that needed bleeding and not some Problem creeping in from the immobiliser? Anyway car's running sweetly again.!
