key programming

Postby andypryce » Fri Jun 09, 2017 5:37 pm

Hello all,

Have migrated from X350 forum, now delving into XK8 ownership. I am purchasing an 02 model next week, only comes with one key. I know the fobs can easily be self programmed to the car, so planning to get one from ebay, but what about the key transponder? I seem to remember from owning an XJ8 that I could get a spare key cut and programmed from Timsons, but when I asked in another branch yesterday he said he thought they could no longer do Jaguars? Anyone any knowledge on this?

Thanks.
Andy

Uncle Rob knows a bit about this type of issue, Andy.

As you have one key which has a transponder slug like an anti-biotic pill inside it, an auto locksmith can possibly help. Probably best to Google and find a travelling man. Most have key cutting gear and can deal with the electronic side.

Mike H and others might have views on how best to deal with the issue. Whatever the cost, two keys are essential. Without any keys at all,, a locksmiths job assumes much bigger proportions.

Mike K is right. Obtaining replacement keys is no longer the simple task it once was (what is these days?). By the time you have messed around buying key blanks and sorting out fob issues, it's as well to bite the bullet, pay the money and delegate the task to an auto locksmith. It certainly pays to check any modern car for key numbers before parting with money. Originally, the XK8 came with three keys, two fully operational and one 'green' valet key. Mike.

Thanks Mike, collecting the car later this week hopefully, so will get onto it soon after, hate having a car with only one key...

you will need to get your new key cut and cloned/copied from the original, I use these guys, the do mail order if you can be with out your car for a day or two as you have only one key

Fobs are plentiful, clean, fit a new battery and follow the widely available programming sequence
hope this helps

forgot to say, whilst this is a Ford style Tibbe key, Ford used six cuts, Jaguar used seven cuts on the blade, most key places will have a Tibbe key cutter for 6 cuts, but not the adaptor for a 7 cut, NLS do, that's why I use them
